Everton held talks over Arias

| Tuesday, 22 September 2020 38comments  |  Jump to last
Atletico Madrid's sporting director has confirmed that Everton are one of the clubs looking to sign Santiago Arias before the transfer window closes.

The Blues have been linked with the fullback, who is an international team-mate of James Rodriguez and Yerry Mina, for the past few weeks and it appears as though the club have held talks with Atleti regarding the player.

Andrea Berta was quoted by Kicker as saying: “We are talking to Roma, Everton and Paris Saint-Germain, but not Bayer Leverkusen. A loan deal with an obligation to buy after ten games is possible.”

Arias has a prior connection with Everton's Director of Football, Marcel Brands, as he signed the Colombian right-back for PSV Eindhoven.

If he can also cover centre-back, it may be worth a punt.

Full back isn't a priority at this time. We have to get cover in where we most need it. And if it is a case of having to make space first before bringing anyone in, signing a player who only plays in a position we have little trouble in makes no sense.

Pace, creativity and finishing ability up front and centre-back are the two main issues with the back-up squad.

Or am I missing something?

Martin, he is exclusively a right back. He's a modern balls-to-the-wall attacking fullback.

This is about improving the overall quality of the team on the pitch. Carlo and Marcel must consider him superior to Coleman and Kenny.

Is he?

Well, two years ago he sure as hell was. He was the Eredivisie Player of the Year and Colombia's starting right-back in the World Cup.

But now he has lost out to Kieran Trippier at Atleti, which is why he's available for £13M at age 28.

For us, this would be an exact comparison to Wolves signing Semedo – like Arias, a recently celebrated right-back who is now surplus to requirements at a top club.

Never heard of him before the rumors, but over 11 seasons the guy hasn't played all that much.

Was he injured? IAW Wiki, he played 25 games his first season there and 14 this last. Since 2009, he's played 210 games. At PSV Eindhoven, he played 30+ games twice.

I can accept he could do a better job than Kenny, who's never going to be that good. If he's in to because Seamus' legs can only take so much now, then okay.

James, I checked Transfermarkt and he's only missed 11 games to injury in the past four seasons.

You've seen him play, you just don't remember. He assisted on the first two goals for Colombia against the USA in a friendly right after the last World Cup. They beat us 4-2.

He's #4 in these highlights, rampaging up the right side. You'll recognize the scorer of their first goal.

Mike (5) - Oh him. Ugh.

If he' still THAT guy, he could split time with Seamus. That would work.

Even Allardyce stopped talking about himself long enough to compliment Kenny on how serious and professional he was for a young boy. Fair enough.

Athletically though, I see Kenny as I do Davies. Intelligent, hard-working, hard-charging, and determined. Just not athlete enough for a big-time Club with aspirations to move up the Table.

I wonder if we get him, and we can field more than 50% South Americans on the field, if we qualify to play in Copa Libertadores de América??!!??

Sure, Bjorn!

We'd need to bring back Jo, Segundo Castillo, The Straq and Funes Mori.

Then Goodison would have to learn to sing Si Señor!

I think this could be a potentially excellent idea. I've hold the view the full-back who plays behind James needs to compliment him not be best right back in the world. They need to be attacking and be prepared to spend time in opposition's half.

Modern football is about defenders doing more attacking and perversely attackers doing more defending. The emphasis is on the unit, closing the spaces and transition.

Mix in he's Colombian, and he has a previous relationship with James at International level. It's also clear we are going to build the team around James partly because he's amazing and partly because he thrives being the man.

I think, whilst it's a gamble, so far the pieces we have bought make sense, and give balance to the squad we have.

That leaves us with Coleman and Kenny. Well actually based on Arias, it leaves Coleman eh ocean be used for games against sides we will need to defend more. Kenny, can be sold has value and will positively affect the player trading profits. 👍🏼

Quality player, seen him play quite a few times. Yes, it would yield commercial value too, we would be Columbia's team. Personally, I want to see us go for Aaron's with Kenny as a makeweight.

The player we should be going all out to get is Lamptey from Brighton. Offer Kenny and a load of cash now before someone else grabs him.

Shame for Kenny if this happens but so be it.

I did think we were done with incoming transfers except some emergency centre-half cover.

This has been on the cards for a while and it looks like it will happen. Kenny will have to be sold to make this move not too damaging cost wise.

George@12, I agree that Lamptey has been brilliant, he reminds me of a young Gana (different position) with his energy covering every blade of grass, but I fear after he has been seen on TV, other Clubs will be feeling the same.

As regards Jonjoe Kenny, I'm not sure, he did well at Schalke and he gets my admiration for having the bottle to go to another Country to prove himself. Whether he has proved he's good enough to be Seamus's back up or next in line is another question in my book.

Arias is a very decent full back. Fast and energetic. Plus he has played with James for Colombia. He'll be 29 in January so I'd prefer a loan or cheap transfer.

I also like Simakan at Strasbourg who's fast and strong and could definitely cover at centre-back if needed. Apparently available for £10m and would give us great cover at right-back and centre-back.

Don't know anything about him and have read somewhere he is only the 3rd choice right-back. If true, seems a bit of a gamble... but what do I know. I'll have to trust Marcel and Carlo if they want him. Puts a question mark over Jonjoe though.

George (12) - Tariq Lamptey was a very highly-rated youth at Chelsea, who has been in the England youth set-up for the best part of 3 years, and only moved to Brighton in January. He's always been a good prospect, and Brighton deserve great credit for taking the risk on his potential, seeing past his lack of height, and giving him the first-team chances that were always likely to prove elusive at Chelsea.

Brighton have already "grabbed him", and their recruitment team deserve a great deal of credit as in Lamptey, Ben White, Steven Alzate and Aaron Connolly I think they have 4 very good first-teamers who are all 22 or under.

He looks boss on YouTube, Marcel knows him well which gives the clips more credence. 3rd choice should be ripe for a loan to team up with compadre James? Need a decent centre-back though and pray Gbamin can recover to full strength to cover in midfield.

Did anyone else hear that we are set to sign Arias but that he got Covid-19 (Atletico players are confirmed to have contracted it) and so the transfer was delayed, at least?

It remains to be seen, if the rumour is true, that we can conclude the deal if he recovers before the window is shut.

I'm not as big on this as some. I'd keep Kenny and save the money. I'm a boring man.

But there's so many other needs we could spend on, why right-back when Seamus doesn't look to me like he's slowing, and Kenny is a more than capable right-back.

We got beaten to the signature of Demerara Gray when he signed for Leicester a couple of years back. Well, I read he is available he has a sweet left foot and is full of beans and covers the grounds quickly...

Lot of talk on players in a position we can manage without. Not downplaying any of the names mentioned but I believe our priority is for a left-sided central defender. If we have the money why not go for a defender that even Holgate may have to improve to keep him out?

The major problem from last season was in midfield and getting an improvement on Walcott and Iwobi, this has been done, and now due to injuries it has highlighted the central-defensive problem.

Coleman seems to be handling his position and has a backup in Kenny. Let's solve the problem at centre-back and look into the January window if needed. It would be nice to have decent coverage in every position but that will take time and money.

Great little player but I agree with Bill, we need a winger who can play on the right of midfield (Lozano, Bailey, Redmond etc...) to give us balance.

Reading between the lines, Jonjoe Kenny can't be fancied for the short-term. Seems that his loan spell in Germany didn't impress Ancelotti as much as it did some Twebbers.

Colin, Bill wants a left footed centre-back as a priority, not a right midfield. Why do people think they are the first / only people to spot a couple of eye-catching performances? Now Tariq Lamptey is the ‘must-have' acquisition. (Has Aarons signed for anyone yet?)

As Andrew points out, he hasn't exactly come from nowhere. There must be some reason Brighton were apparently unchallenged for his signature, with his lack of stature an obvious potential issue when it comes to the defensive responsibilities he will be expected to take on.

I agree with those who feel we need back up at right-back but, going by his recent comments, Ancelloti thinks very highly of Seamus.

On the left-sided centre-back issue. We have known since we failed to re-sign Zouma that it was an area that we had to strengthen. I will be surprised and concerned if we don't plug that gap because, if we don't, it will hurt us at some stage of the season.

Ake is the one that got away. Pep stole a march on everyone with that move. A great signing.

Why aren't we trying to sign a quality striker now that we have the midfield to supply the attacking players? What happens if Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison gets injured and the other one runs out of steam? Are we going to rely on Sandro, Kean or Cenk Tosun?

It just seems a shame that we now have a brilliant midfield... we really need to capitalize on that but the focus seems to be on a full-backs.

It's hard being an Everton supporter in Australia. We do not get much news about Everton as they are not seen as a contender for anything. From what I've checked on the internet, we have not sold any players as yet – only loaned players from our U23 squad – but, hey, what a start!

Pipe Sierra, a Colombian journo who was spot on with his reporting of the James Rodríguez transfer, is saying that Arias is on his way to Bayer Leverkusen. Medical just passed. Apparently Everton were unwilling to guarantee he would be first choice.

I may be alone here, but I think Seamus has put in some monumental performances recently. His form after lockdown was the only bright light towards the end of last season.

Liverpool seemed to think his legs are gone and targeted him but, despite several one-on-oones, Mane got no change at all out of him.

I also noticed Spurs trying to do it in the opening game too, but Son (who ran riot last week) was left looking frustrated and beaten as, time and again, Coleman got the better of him.

Seamus is knocking on. The club are right to be looking for a replacement, but I believe our captain is enjoying something of an Indian Summer. Hopefully it will take him to Wembley and he can finally get his hands on a trophy.

Jonjoe Kenny has been better than many of the players seen normally in the first team during our latest cup campaign.

I have not seen him waste a pass so not sure why he cannot be given a chance as Seamus's understudy.

Ah... but Jonjoe Kenny was in the same defence as Todibo in a "woeful Shalke" team – to quote sources on another thread on why we should not take Todibo on loan.

So does Kenny not get tarred with the same brush?

If we had as many points at the end of the season as we have opinions on ToffeeWeb, we would have won the title by January.
