It seems things aren't going so great for everyone's favourite goalkeeper, Nick Pope, at Newcastle. Two big howlers in the first twelve minutes, which luckily for Pope didn't lead to a goal. However Newcastle have just taken the lead from a shot which Pope should have saved.
Mike Gaynes
5 Posted 03/10/2020 at 20:24:36
Rob, don't worry, somebody on this board will still be advocating for us to buy him this week, along with Foster, Forster, Butland and the guy we beat today.
Will Mabon
6 Posted 03/10/2020 at 20:24:53
Rob, he was dodgy, but should've saved that shot? You have high standards, Man.

Will Mabon
13 Posted 03/10/2020 at 21:44:33
Same again, Rob - goalies feeling they have to play the ball out like Pirlo. Too much pressure/overlap of roles. Just kick the bleeding ball away!
Rob Halligan
14 Posted 03/10/2020 at 21:51:12

You're right though, just hoof it away first time. If the ball is 70-80 yards down the pitch, then your opponents can't score.

Crazy at Old Trafford. Spurs leading 4-1 after being one down in first minute. Martial sent off but Spurs player not, despite what looked like a slap to the neck by both. United are shocking.

Rob Halligan

Can't wait to play United, they are piss poor at the back, and not much better up front, and nothing in midfield.
John Pierce
30 Posted 04/10/2020 at 17:16:26
I look at United and I see a lot of similarities with ourselves over the last season or two. The balance just isn't there, De Gea is on the glass mountain and they have problems in defense.

They need a player or two to blend the side, knit it together. The main issue is their holding player, and still persisting with Pogba.

Fun times, just another reason why we have to go for it, off and on the pitch.

Barry Rathbone
31 Posted 04/10/2020 at 17:32:21
Problem Utd, City and Chelsea have is the transitional phases they are enduring (Utd and Chels have been enduring the transition for several seasons now) are not fixable through their usual blueprint of waving the cheque book round.

No longer is there an abundance of elite players to splash the cash on so top dollar is being paid for "game changing" players who are anything but - Pogba and Lukaku at Utd being examples.

Slightly annoying really because it leaves the gate open like last year for you know who across the park.

Kieran Kinsella

I keep saying it and I keep getting proved right (rare for me). Too much effin' around at the back is putting keepers under too much pressure. This will keep happening to most or all of them whilst teams continue to think they can have 12 outfield players.

Since Old Red Nose packed up in 2013 Man Utd's various managers have spent over ONE BILLION quid on players. 302 million of that by Ole himself. Yet there's Gary Neville complaining that the board isn't backing poor old Ole. Unbelievable. just how much money is enough?
Their problem is they have a second rate manager whose sole qualification for being their manager is that he was a fans favourite back in the day.
Well guess what. Second rate managers produce second rate sides as we have found out to our bitter cost. Sack him and get someone who knows what they are doing.
Tell you one thing. If Manu had signed the players we signed this window they would be top of the league instead of us. But they didn't so they are where they are. Boo hoo.
Brent Stephens

Tom Bowers
105 Posted 04/10/2020 at 20:12:53
I only said yesterday that the RS defence was looking a bit porous but I didn't expect Villa to get four by half time.
Fran Mitchell
106 Posted 04/10/2020 at 20:12:53
Frank: City spend 62 million on a central defender. Utd pend 40 million on one midfielder. Liverpool spend 70 million on 3 players.

And they are treated like they hardly invest.

Everton spend 40 million on 4 summer signings, and they describe it as 'big spending everton'.

Fran Mitchell
107 Posted 04/10/2020 at 20:14:28
Watkins is quality. I mentioned him about 2 years ago as one to watch, saw a game on TV and was well impressed. Then last season he was one of the best in the Championship. He's gonna be a top striker.

Jay Wood

110 Posted 04/10/2020 at 20:16:25
Think about it. The way we are set up to play. The way we have been playing this season, this Liverpool side is perfectly set up for us.

Play that high line against us, James will get the wedge out to chip it in behind them for DCL and Richy to run beyond them all day long.

Look at Watkins second goal and how he ran in from the flank at the retreating Gomez, cut inside him. BOOM! That is a classic Richy move.

Klippity will have no time ahead of the Derby game to work and drill his defence.

As I said yesterday, start believing Blues. We're on to something here.

Will Mabon
111 Posted 04/10/2020 at 20:18:09
Frank, don't know if you caught it in the commentary - since the start of last season, Watkins has scored more than anyone else in the top flight.
Rob Halligan

Dan Nulty -

NOT having a pop. That's the exact attitude that we can no longer have or abide. Another perspective:

This is the PERFECT time to play the shite. They are down, and we have a GLORIOUS opportunity to just knock their dick in the dirt.

It's an opportunity, and nothing to be fearful of. Fear is a disease.

Ha Jamie, just protecting myself if we do get beat. Going to try not get my hopes up. I'd hate it if our start is ruined by them and all their rubbish fans on twitter.

One thing is for certain, this league is wide open. I really hope we can be fortunate with injuries. This international break has hopefully come at the right time for us and that after the Wlaes game DCL spends some time on the bench for England and comes back reasonably fresh.

This has reignited my love of Everton and football these last 4 weeks. I feel alive on game days now!

Jay Wood

276 Posted 04/10/2020 at 21:18:23
The scoreline flattered Liverpool, not Villa.

Barkley could have had a hat-trick in the first half. Watkins could have had another two in the second half.

Not only could we murder that high defensive line, recall James' two second half goals yesterday, how clinically we punished loose Brighton passes.

The Reds' defence did that all game today.

Two weeks is too long to wait for the Derby now.

Paul Birmingham

Apparently Allison is out for a while yet.

Having Thiago will help them, their midfield was awful beyond extreme today. But Van Dijk has not been at the level he was before, and the rest of the defence is very weak if he isn't on top form.

Remember how Klopps Dortmund all of a sudden went from CL finalists and league winners to bottom of the league, losing 9 on the trot or something like it. The players were just knackered and couldnt implement the 100% super press any longer they have that look about them. Maybe i'm wrong. but

It's not an uncommon character flaw. I know a guy who is still hoping a certain Spurs player breaks a leg.

Fran @125, you're right about the RS back four. Van Dijk has been out of form for a while and the two full backs are defensively average.

We must play our normal game against them and not get distracted by noise. Above all, we must show the same courage as Villa.

Looking at Villa, Watkins looks excellent. Not just his goals, but his hold up play also.

Judged on this one game alone, Grealish and Barkeley are going to have a lot of fun playing with each other.

(Note to Ray Roche: best not comment on my last paragraph).

This is what you can achieve when you get at them.
Give them no space a bully them the way they bully other teams.
They lose their shape and become petulant.
If we get at them we may just win the derby.

Well in Paul @306, my brother got a cracking win double for the West Ham, game, DCL - hatrick and EFC win 4-1.

What a day, but a long, long, long, season ahead, but EFC, can take strength and belief.

Let's get a few smart moves in these next 24 hrs.

I hope you're right Fran@299. Villa were brilliant, Liverpool played the offside trap like an under 14 team, but the most significant thing was that it's the first time I've seen Liverpool truly bullied for a few seasons. Klopp said Arsenal were brave the other night, I'm just glad he never fooled Dean Smith!

The shite occasionally put "not arsed" shifts in like this but I only remember them doing it once against us in 60+ yrs. Andy Johnson's hat trick game.

They'll be up for us make no mistake.

The arrogance of that Souness prick when discussing what they should do to 'small' teams in the match build up.. and Carraghers sniffling disbelief during commentary just shows the arrogance of the cretins. Referring to a club like AV as a small club.. Now if only we can ram it back down their throats in the same fashion.

One of the things I like about the way we're playing currently is how we dictate the pace of a game. We are pressing nicely off the ball, but ultimately our game is based on slick interpassing moves on the ball, making the ball do the work, with Rodriguez the lynchpin.

In contrast, the likes of Liverpool are reliant on a heavy press, which I suppose is Klopp's gegenpressing, which is consistent with their general style of relying on pace and fitness over slickness, a style that goes back to the days of Shankley. Their midfield is basically quite ordinary, and not at the level of ours.

I find the gegenpressing style tedious and lacking entertainment value, just as I've always found Liverpool's style to be tedious and workmanlike from the days of the 60s, especially compared with how we played then, which was the Holy Trinity School of Science.

I expect we'll take them to pieces in the Derby. This is not hype or over-expectation, but realism based on our technical quality and organisation. And it'll be about time.

There's obvious truth in what you say, however, I'd rather go into a home derby on the back of seven straight wins than travel to the neighbours following a 7-2 reverse. What will be will be when the game comes around, we'll take it on the chin if it doesn't go our way, but if it does end in a win for us, imagine the confidence it would give our team?

Apparently, the last reigning champions to concede seven was Arsenal in 1953 when they lost at Sunderland 7--1.

Stan Schofield,

If you had posted that 4 weeks ago I would have pissed myself laughing; but anything resembling normality has gone right out the window.

Carlo the wizard came to Everton, he sat back and watched and took everything on board, then like the magician he is, he waved his wand; bought players to Everton that are truly world class, got Michael Keane to believe in himself and told DCL that he IS a number 9.

As you so rightly say, that lot over the park are there to be beat.

Danny 326, I wonder if Carlo wanted 3 new midfielders?? (Play Hoijberg alongside Dacoure and Allan?). Did we have an official bid in for Hoijberg? I remember rumours saying he preferred them to us but not sure if he had bid actual money. Your right though he looked pretty good today, but we must take into account how shit man utd were!

Let's focus on EFC, forget the RS, and The Sky, bollocks.

They are struggling to accept the status quo, as is now. Pathetic RS, and arrogant ex RS players.

The next few weeks are key, but with luck and belief, let's send out a message to the football world.

Like in October 1984, Everton, sent out some significant messages, beating the RS, Sharpies special, and United (x2) in a couple of-days, 5-0, at home, and on the following Tuesday night, 2-1, in the Milk Cup, at theirs.

Good omens.

It struck me today that without the crowds Man Utd and the shite do not have supporters screaming for decisions and intimidating the opposition which kinda levels the playing field a bit.

They do still get VAR and 50/50 decisions but not as much.

Just a thought.

And if only Barkley hadn't missed those 2 sitters. Wow, great time to be a Blue.
