Besic returns to Everton

Friday, 19 June, 2020 43comments  |  Jump to last
Muhamed Besic's season-long loan at Sheffield United has come to an end and the Bosnian international is back with Everton.

Unable to hold down a regular first-team berth at Goodison Park, Besic has had loan spells at Middlesbrough and with the Blades over the past couple of seasons.

Neither club has taken up options to sign the midfielder thus far so he returns to Everton where he will enter the final year of his contract.

One good game versus Argentina 6 years ago, and he's been riding it at our expense every since. What a joker

He picked up up a terrible injury and sadly he never recovered the pace or learnt to control his on field temper.

Another who sadly failed to reach his perceived potential.

Still I'd rather him in the centre of midfield over Schnides.

He will be in charge of enforcing coronavirus prevention measures like social distancing. Anyone not keeping the requisite distance will be kicked in the ankle.

Meh, we've been stuck with him for 4 years. One more to go.

What's certain is that he will continue his career for buttons, wherever that may be. He'll hang on to this last year of wages like grim death.

Hopefully, we'll read of a 1 million transfer fee. Would indicate we still had to pay part of his wages. But that would mean he's gone.

His contract an impulse purchase, THE worst signing of Roberto's time at Everton. He actually contributed nothing. That's hard to do.

We'll miss out on our transfer targets, Schneids will be sold, and Besic will be our first choice DM next season.

This is Everton you know.

The knuckleduster tatoo on his left arm should have been a warning

His first touch in an Everton shirt was a comical mistake leading to a goal. Hard to believe that he failed to improve on that disaster.

Two high points to his career, first, did a decent job on Messi in the World Cup – once.

Started off with (what passes from him) a roar vs Chelsea, got injured, and allowed Naismith to come on and score a hat-trick.

But, as with all these 'usual suspects' (Niase etc, the list seems endless), he didn't sign himself or set his own terms and conditions.

Blame the people who signed and signed off on every one of our wastes of space.

Harsh reviews here, got to disagree with all of them apart from the one that says he'd be better in centre-midfield than Schneiderlin.

He always looked like he gave a shit and was straight in on the tackle. He was kept out by McCarthy when McCarthy was decent; he provided backup to the team when Martinez had us singing about him.

He's nowhere near as bad as these comments are trying to make out. I would put on the bench for a fifth substitute or send him on to kick Henderson, likeable.

I agree with Derek... we're a joke of a club run by baffoons.

Bad signing but not a financial disaster as he's had the loans which may have covered some of his wages and possibly a few loan fees. Pales in comparison to Bolasie, Walcott, Schneiderlin etc.

It seems like both Middlesbrough and Sheffield United had some fans who rated him. I'm surprised that a Championship club didn't pick him up. (I think maybe they wanted to but he chose Sheffield?)

Not sure he could have done a lot worse than our succession of mediocre central midfield performances over the last few years. He'll presumably get another loan or a permanent move this summer.

Kieran, you clearly didn't see him vs Man City and West Ham at home.

Did he really play enough to make a fair judgement? We bought a bloke who it was reported played central defence and on the basis of a World Cup game in which he kept Messi largely uninvolved and then played him in midfield. Was he really the problem?

He won't be playing for us any time soon so it will be off on loan again. Maybe he can be released from his contract so he can sign a longer term deal with an interested club as a free agent.

I struggle to understand the contract extension he got, he never showed anywhere near enough to elevate us.

Is he ineligible to play the rest of the season with us or can he play? If not, that's the end of the story ‘til next season, when he goes on his travels again.

56 appearances, the last one in 2017.

Zero goals. Zero assists. 14 yellow cards.

And one really good performance, against City. One.

Kinda pathetic that he's still a topic of conversation around here.

Dave @19,

I think it's a bit confusing. Fifa changed their rules so that loaned-out players can play for up to three clubs this season, instead of two...

However, I believe that is trumped by a vote of the Premier League stakeholders (aka 'clubs') that no additions can be made to the 25-man squads posted at the end of January 2020 and set for the rest of the season — however long it takes.

So I think that excludes Besic, or anyone else coming back to the club who was not registered in that revised 25-man squad, even though we own them.

Note that there is an exception for youngsters like Branthwaite coming up from the Academy sides (yes, I know he was an import) but the provision is that players under 21 (or is it under 23?) can be added to the 25-man squad at any time.

The City game showed what he was capable of and his absence from the second leg was greeted as a disaster at the time.

Such a shame he has never replicated that form but there is/was ability there.

The ultimate 'looks busy' player. Runs around, gets stuck in, doesn't score, doesn't create chances, picks up cards like I pick up Lorne Sausage crisps.
I'm amazed we haven't sold him yet.

Have we ever had so many useless players on the books at any one time? We seem to have collected them in recent seasons – sadly, this chap is a certainty for that list.

Pete (9), I thought I was the only one to remember that back heel from his first touch in an Everton team. That game (5-3 to Chelsea) was the beginning of a long drawn-out end to Martinez's tenure.

Actually I remember Besic's first touch in an Everton shirt as being at Tranmere - pre-season friendly (please don't tell me my mind is going) and he had an excellent game.

I said at the time he'd turn out to be a good signing! How long have I got to be able to prove that one correct?!

Mike Gaynes

Ajay and Pete, I remember it vividly, and it was a stupid show-pony move in a ridiculous position. I won't say I wrote him off for that moment of idiocy, but he certainly never did anything to make up for it.

Can't fault his effort or willingness, Brent. Doesn't seem that long ago that people on here were praising Besic for 'getting stuck in' and slating Barry for being 'slow'. Only one of them is a footballer and only one of them should still be here. We've got the wrong one here.
