Holgate signs new deal at Everton

Tuesday, 3 March, 2020 69comments  |  Jump to last

Everton have secured Mason Holgate on an extended contract after the defender agreed to new terms with the club.

The 23-year-old signed a new five-year deal today, a big boost for the Blues following speculation that clubs like Manchester City were eyeing a summer move for him.

Holgate has been in sparkling form this season after returning from a season-long loan at West Bromwich Albion and he cited the forward progress at Goodison Park and the desire for silverware among the reasons why he has committed his future to Everton.

"The direction the club is going, it is a great club to be at and I am really excited about it," Holgate said.

"We want to move to the next step and push for bigger and better things.

"I want to win things - and winning some silverware is where I see us."

Great news. He's just signed a five year deal. Zero possibility indeed mr ancelotti.

Can be one one of the very best defenders. This is an excellent statement by the club and an act of faith by Holgate. I hope he will be our captain soon.

Brilliant. Where's it been announced? Developing a good core of players. The cheapest ones often end up being the best.

On the OS.

Best case scenario we can enjoy watching him as he matures into a cultured international class defender.

Worst case scenario his fee has just gone up substantially

Chris, well we've seen it happen a few times before, but to be honest, mine was just a fleeting thought, I think under Ancelotti and Brands, plus Moshiri and in the background Usmanov we are in a much better place and going upwards as Holgate said after signing the contract, he said in so many words” I want to win silverware and I can see it happening with Everton”.

Quite a turnaround really – looked like he would struggle to make it at Everton, and was even rumoured to be on his way less than a year ago.

He's been one of our best players over the last few months and hopefully will keep on improving. It was great to see him, Calvert-Lewin and Tom Davies in a huddle after the match on Sunday; they're clearly big mates and that's good for the club.

Wonderful news, supplemented by the fact that the RS lost to Chelsea in the FA cup and that the winning goal was scored by non-other than Ross Barkley (it's usually ex RS players that put the nail in our coffin - so it's nice to see it happen the other way round for a change).

We should be able to add Jonjoe Kenny to that list next season. Got his limitations but a very good attitude. Sad that Kieran Dowell isn't part of it all. Probably the most talented of the lot, too. Even so, a decent core of English players which provides a good platform.

The turnaround at this club since the first week of December - first Duncan, then out wonderful new manager and now the core of the club's future showing such faith, is unbelievable. These are great days.

The referee initially signalled a goal and was overruled by VAR.

The new contract is great news for Holgate, the fans and the club.

Always believed in this lad, same as Calvert-Lewin. But then I believed in Rodwell, Barkley and Hibbo and they all fell short of my expectations. Don't let me down, lads.
Tom Bowers
23 Posted 03/03/2020 at 23:19:38
Let's be honest, the lad like so many others suffered under past managers but he has upped his game this season and one hopes that he and some other players will benefit from the experience and guile of Carlo.

Glad that Barkley stuck it to the RS and he is another that didn't quite reach the heights expected from him at Goodison. Like Delboy, he has shown a lot of improvement this season but Delboy sadly is gone for the season. So pleased what his Watford teammates did to the RS.

I've just come back from a gig to this fantastic news, I'm made up. He and DCL are turning into proper players, class. All this talk of English talent, Barkley scoring against the RS and Ancellotti saying that he wants to add more energy to the midfield it got me thinking about us taking Barkley back. Anyone? Nah it's probably the beer talking.

Great news which augurs well for the future, and what are the foundations of a 'new Everton' for hopefully years to come.

Thanks Jay @10&11, for the links, it is always a bonus when you get Academy, or young players who have come through the ranks, actually wanting to sign a new contract and become part of the bright future ahead.

We are still building, but with the addition of a couple of players in the Summer I do honestly believe that we will eventually become a 'force majeur' again in the Premier Leagueand hopefully European Football.

Great news, Holgate new contract, Barkley banging one in against our neighbours – can anything put a dampener on this evening?

Anyway, forget that, let's get Calvert-Lewin's contract sorted out.

Phil Lewis
27 Posted 04/03/2020 at 00:38:06
Excellent news. I've defended both him and Calvert-Lewin all along, especially 12 months ago when many derided and criticised these talented young men.

In our present situation, I would have no hesitation playing Holgate in a defensive midfield role. He is currently our strongest option and it would give Gomes more freedom to express himself.

In a 4-4-2 formation, I believe our current strongest XI form-wise would be:
Pickford (Virginia may possibly be worth chancing), Coleman, Keane, Mina, Baines, Walcott, Holgate, Gomes, Bernard, Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin.

Fran Mitchell
28 Posted 04/03/2020 at 00:39:22
Good news. He will become a very good player indeed. Hopefully next season Gibson can make the step up as 3rd choice.

In a way, it's positive we didn't sign Zouma in the end – and he has been dodgy for Chelsea – as it has given Holgate this opportunity.

Kenny the next one to progress, with hopefully a couple of others too (still annoyed that we sold Antonee Robinson, that could have been a whole back line worth of young players brought through the ranks).

Ajay Gopal
29 Posted 04/03/2020 at 03:18:30
Fran (28) - exactly! I am so glad that - firstly, Ferguson showed so much confidence in Holgate and gave him his big break, and secondly, the lad himself grabbed the opportunity with both hands. This is such excellent news, and I never got the people craving for Zouma. In Holgate and Gibson, and potentially Branthwaite, we have 3 excellent young defenders, who could serve the club as top Premier League defenders for years to come.

I had predicted (more accurately, ‘hoped') that Holgate and Calvert-Lewin would come good, and so glad to see that happen.

Let me make another prediction/wish here - the next young player to break through will be Beni Baningime. Remember the name!

Brilliant news, Mason is developing fast into a top class player. He is one of the players with the attitude and talent to take us to the next level, starting now on this run-in and then an all out assault on the top 4 next season

He will soon become the club's captain and lead from the front.

Mark Dunford
33 Posted 04/03/2020 at 09:24:38
Just to echo all the message of support for this extremely positive news. Let's hope Calvert-Lewin follows and that Beni's undoubted talent also comes through (Ajay 28). Latter was there for all to see in his various appearances.

Following the positive train, Kenny should return as first-choice right-back. We still have gaps in the squad, but there is undoubtedly young talent at the club – Gordon? – and this contract for Mason Holgate shows there is a route to the first team

Jim Bennings
36 Posted 04/03/2020 at 10:35:23
But we still need to improve our defensive record don't we?

It's all well and good deals like this but we are conceding too many shitty goals and have done all season so at some point the defence (goalkeeper included) need putting under the spotlight right?

Problem areas as follows.

We don't keep enough clean sheets.

Are we not working as hard as we should as a team?

Why do we persist with playing it out from the back, it does not work, didn't work when Martinez had Stones doing it and it's not working now, if anything the goals we are conceding lately feel a bit like Groundhog Day.

Martin Mason

I think that this is another clear message, amongst many, that the club will not accept mediocrity.
Annika Herbert
38 Posted 04/03/2020 at 12:09:51
Jim @36, I honestly feel that our defence would be much improved with a box-to-box midfielder in front of them. Gomes apart, our midfield is woeful at times and, although he works hard, Sigurdsson is no more than a passenger.

But I do agree we need another centre-half to go alongside Holgate, or give the young lad on loan at Fleetwood a go, Gibson. Maybe Gbamin will be the answer to our midfield being of more help defensively? Let's hope so anyway. We also need a new right-back too, if Kenny doesn't prove up to the task.

Martin Berry
39 Posted 04/03/2020 at 12:16:50
A quality player, like Calvert-Lewin, and both just needed time to develop. Let's hope they both continue to improve.

Carlo will also bring in a left-footer in central defense, along with an energetic midfielder and right-winger these last two positions are fact and mentioned by Marcel and Carlo recently so it will be interesting in the summer transfer window.

James Marshall
40 Posted 04/03/2020 at 12:27:52
All this really shows is the club want him to stay, and he wants to stay, currently. It's meaningless with regards to other clubs making bids, and him actually leaving.

If the right bids come in, all players have a value and can/will leave.

Jim Bennings
41 Posted 04/03/2020 at 12:33:32

I'd say that's probably one of the biggest factors in tying him down to a long term contract.

He's English and English young players do tend to command quite mental transfer fees (Solanke) amongst others.

We have about four really big saleable assets and now Holgate has signed a big contract, if he was to leave in 18 months time we'll get a very considerable fee.

James Marshall
42 Posted 04/03/2020 at 12:52:10
Agreed, Jim. A lot of the thread appears to talk about what great news this is, keeping him long term etc but the point is really about making him into a saleable asset.

Whether we sell him is another matter, which only time will tell.

Rob Dolby
43 Posted 04/03/2020 at 13:06:33
It's good for the lad and the club that we have tied Holgate down to a contract.

Overall our Goalie and whole defence isn't too bad, probably top 3rd of the table.

The strikers are getting there and are probably top third standard if not higher.

The midfield is definitely lower 3rd standard. Gomes and Gbamin aside the rest of them would struggle getting into most other prem teams. Certainly top 8 teams.

The obvious focus in the summer has to be midfield.

Sam Hoare
44 Posted 04/03/2020 at 14:10:24
Great news. Think our defense would look better with a goalkeeper who makes more saves. Pickford has been very poor this season, though he will probably retain the gloves as there are bigger problem areas.

Richarlison, Digne, Calvert-Lewin, Holgate, Gomes. That is a decent core of young-ish players. I think there is a lot more to come from Gbamin, Iwobi, Kean and maybe Gordon.

We need a dominant left-footed centre-back, a super mobile well-rounded box-to-box central midfielder and a pacy, hard-working, goalscoring right midfielder. Possibly a quick and competent right-back as well if Sidibe continues to make mistakes. Then we are looking like a more complete team that could go places.

The trouble is we need to sell some players. Tosun's injury is a real pain.

Paul Jones
45 Posted 04/03/2020 at 14:16:48
Good that Holgate has signed a new deal. I suspect unlike the past there will be no give away escape clause for preferred bidders.

This season, I was very impressed with his performances in midfield where he was far superior to the usual incumbents. Better defender and he could pass the ball more than 5 yards sideways and backwards.

Holgate intially emerged from a League Cup game as being all-round better than players around him who were on huge contracts. Everton need to give him a better contract if they where being serious about progressing the Club.
Paul Jones

One of the box-to-box midfielders can and should be Tom Davies. In my opinion, and as he showed against Man Utd, he can be very effective. He has 2 weaknesses that I see: one, he isn't a great tackler and two he can be guilty of giving the ball away but, if he can work on this, and he is still young, he could be a formidable player and great for the squad.

Look at Henderson for Liverpool, he has blossomed into a phenomenal player after being no better than Tom Davies. Nothing would give me more satisfaction than another midfielder coming up from the U23s and us buying nobody.

Steve Brown
50 Posted 04/03/2020 at 16:31:10
Seeing how Holgate, Calvert-Lewin, Davies (yes Davies), Kenny and Gordon are progressing through careful nurturing and development, I hope we can all be more patient with young players when they break into the first team. It is self-defeating to do otherwise.
Annika Herbert
51 Posted 04/03/2020 at 17:29:06
Martin @49, I fully agree. Tom Davies could well be that midfielder we are looking for. I still believe there is a lot more to come from him.
David Currie
54 Posted 04/03/2020 at 17:34:08
Great news on Holgate, now make him captain.

Steve 50, I agree with you on the young lads and Holgate, Calvert-Lewin, Davies, Kenny, Gordon and Gibson makes it 6 English players all with the talent to make it. Holgate and Calvert-Lewin have stepped up big time and should have a chance of an England call up.

I have belief that Davies can also step up as his performance in the second-half against Man Utd was superb. Kenny hopefully can join the first team squad next season and I have high hopes that Gibson can be a future left sided centre-back for us.

Gordon can only get better and hope he can get some minutes on the pitch this season. On Sunday we had 7 English players starting, one Irish player, and only 3 Foreign players.

Great news as he's come on a bundle this season (well at least the last 10-odd games). Interesting to see the unanimous positive posts, surely from some people who called him a carthorse earlier in the season and were whinging at Brands not bringing in a replacement for Zouma?

Very good news – the boy has become a man. Leader of the back 4 and possibly a future captain.

Now buy a John Terry type to go alongside him – "none shall pass" is what being a centre-half pairing is all about.

Very pleased for the lad, and for us.

The talk about City being interested may or may not be true, but we need to be signing/retaining players who are good enough for City, not selling our best players to them.

Sam Hoare
60 Posted 04/03/2020 at 21:50:26
Martin@49: I hope we will not rely on Davies. He has talent and will hopefully get more opportunities but we need someone with more athleticism and physical presence in the middle; especially if its someone to partner the defensively weak Andre Gomes. Davies plays some good passes but defensively he offers very little.
Robert Tressell
61 Posted 04/03/2020 at 22:47:38
Well the recent rumours are of Rabiot and Marc Roca. Both very good left-footed central midfielders who might complement Gomes. The latter likely to get relegated with Espanyol but persistently linked with Bayern and compared to Alonso.

Davies has a big role to play but he's not a natural fit alongside Gomes in a 4-4-2. Going to be a fascinating summer.

Rob #43

I fail to see how you can possibly make any sort of assessment of Gbamin yet. He is a total unknown quantity. You state 'Gomes and Gbamin aside'. Well, we all know Gomes is class, but what do you base your opinion of Gbamin in an Everton shirt on? He's only played a matter of minutes for us.

We've had several players in recent years, signed with big reputations complete with big price tags, only to completely fail in a Royal Blue Jersey. Klaassen, Niasse, Sandro, Bolasie, to name but a few. Incidentally, these flops signed long contracts which placed them amongst our highest earners. Managerial madness.

In retrospect, it makes it all the more satisfying to see the likes of Mason Holgate, who let's be honest, was vilified not so long ago by sections of the crowd, finally getting the recognition and reward that his talent deserves.

We don't know for sure yet, if Gbamin's injury will even allow him to resume top-flight football. I sincerely wish the lad well and hope he makes a full recovery. He may well in time turn out to be a star buy.

But the situation as it stands, the fact that he's hardly mentioned now and updates on his progress being scarce, continues to inspire little confidence. Hence, my earlier post suggesting we play Holgate in a defensive midfield role. He has the vision, skill and strength to become a commanding midfield General, while we continue to monitor Gbamin's progress.

Ed Prytherch
64 Posted 05/03/2020 at 01:15:19
Mason's progress is an argument in favour of sending our young players out on loan. The ones who do well away from their comfortable surroundings have the strength of character to fight for a place when they return. The ones who do poorly were not going to make it anyway.
Andy Crooks
65 Posted 05/03/2020 at 01:16:03
Dom, Tom and Mason have often been referred to as Championship players. That is not a criticism of those who thought that, because young players blow hot and cold. Garbitt and Pennington don't look as good now, but who knows.

What I do know, however, is that we have 𧴜 million plus of talent who have come through David Unsworth's team, and that is a conservative estimate.

Martin Nicholls
66 Posted 05/03/2020 at 09:00:45
Andy - spot on in most respects but maybe a bit optimistic about Garbutt! The guy qualifies for a testimonial next year so he'd be a late developer indeed if he made the grade with us!
Mike Benjamin
67 Posted 05/03/2020 at 10:21:52
The dramatic improvement in both Calvert-Lewin and Holgate is that both, through shortage of options, we're getting starts virtually every game. It also helps Dom having Richarlison alongside. Likewise I don't think we will see the best of Davies until he is playing regularly. If we cannot give him the time then a loan to Germany might be the answer.
Liam Reilly
68 Posted 05/03/2020 at 14:17:31
He's come on leaps and bounds. Deserves to be first choice in the Center pairing and can also hold his own in the middle of the park.

There's a good possibility that he and Calvert-Lewin could be called up to the national side soon, so it makes good business to tie them down to long-term contracts now as, no doubt, the newspapers will have them both sold to Man Utd or Man City if they perform at all well.

Phil Smith

As Chelsea and us (to a lesser extent) have shown this season — if you give the kids regular time, then they will show their worth.

Always an obvious talent to anybody who had eyes in their head.

Silva acted like a complete moron. How anyone could have prepared the lighthouse stopper (insert name) to a footballing talent like this is totally at odds with everything I believe in.

Holgate still has a way to go. He goes for the Hollywood pass too often, but he'll learn to pick his moment.

His risky style of play will get him into trouble from time to time too, but every time I see him a turn out of trouble or side-step a high press with that air of "I'm a proper footballer", I just want to sing "This is how we do it. This is how we do it baby!"

Five more Mason Holgates please, Mr Brands!

David Currie
71 Posted 07/03/2020 at 04:10:16
Great post, Darren, and I thought Mason Holgate was treated very poorly by Silva who wrongly thought Keane and Mina were better. The best thing to happen to Mason was the sacking of Silva and big Dunc taking over for a few games. When Carlo got the job, I was confident that he would like Holgate as a player. I would love to see him be the captain.
