U23s seal big win at Plymouth in PL Cup

Everton U23s spurned an excellent opportunity to take the lead in the 20th minute of this penultimate group game in the Premier League Cup, played at Home Park. A super pass by Beni Baningime released Denis Adeniran on the right and when he pulled the ball back across goal for Simms, the striker was tripped. The referee pointed instantly to the spot but Adeniran's kick was well saved.
Fortunately, it took Adeniran just three minutes to make amends when he attacked the right-hand side of the Argyle penalty area before drilling a fine finish past the keeper.
The second goal came on 37 minutes. Nathangelo Markelo powered forward from midfield, leaving three Argyle defenders in his wake. When he was finally stopped, the loose ball was squared across the box by Kyle John for Simms to poke into the net.
The third goal came with the very last touch of the first period. Adeniran swung a corner into the Plymouth box and Astley glanced his header into the corner of the net.
Simms scored his second, and Everton's fourth, in the 63rd minute. Matthew Foulds floated a lovely cross towards the far post and Simms had the simplest of tasks to nod the ball into the net.
John was unfortunate not to be on the scoresheet and Simms was fractions away from netting his third. The striker is on 10 goals for the season and it could have been 11 in the last minute when his effort hit the crossbar.
Everton U23s: Tyrer, Astley, Foulds, Markelo (70' Onyango), Ouzounidis, Branthwaite, John, Baningime (69' Denny), Simms, Iversen, Adeniran (67' Quirk).
Subs not Used: Hansen, Joe Anderson.

Also, Dave, very interesting comments from Unsworth on Ellis Simms. He was quite critical of him. He effectively said he is a year away from first-team contention and needs a lot of work on his game. He singled out his work off the ball, and his work in attacking build-up, but he said if you slot him through on goal, then there's no one better at the U23 level. This explains why Carlo has not had a look at him just yet.
What's the team, Dave?

I see the Plymouth keeper saved Adeniran's penalty before we score. Get him in!
Simms on the scoresheet again, I see.

Article on Unsworth today saying that Simms is nowhere near ready for the first-team squad.

No surprise at Rhino's comments on Simms, from me. Still very young and raw.
He just got a second, mind, at Plymouth. Now 4-0. He has come on well this season for the U23s having looked well out of place in a few step-up appearances last season.

Obviously not in that line up!
The subs are: Anderson, Hansen (goal), Denny, Quirk, and Onyango.
Simms's two goals were a simple tap-in and nod-in from centres, but he was there and got on the end of them, before anyone starts booing and cursing him.

Meanwhile, Lewis Dobbin has opened the scoring for England's U17s in a game versus Ukraine U17s. I don't know where that game is being played.

The back four is certain; John is a right-sided midfielder, Markelo plays anywhere, Simms up top, Iversen and Baningime in central midfield for sure, but Adeniran is versatile too. Maybe John on the left Adeniran on the right and Markelo and Simms up top.

Harry Tyler, the goalkeeper, is playing a blinder, saved three penalties up to now... no that's a lie, but he would have done if Plymouth had been awarded them, remember the name — Harry Tyler!!!
