U23s crumble at Man City
Manchester City U23s 4 - 1 Everton U23s
Everton U23s are at the Academy Stadium in Manchester tonight, taking on their City counterparts without regulars Gordon, Evans, Feeney and Gibson in this Premier League 2 match-up.
The home side took the lead in the first half when Branthwaite's headed clearance was returned with interest, into the Everton goal.
Branthwaite would redeem himself before the end of the game, powering home a fine header to get Everton on the scoresheet. But it was well and truly a lost cause at that point after City had run riot earlier in the second half, banging in three goals in quick succession to end the match as a contest.
Everton U23s: Tyrer, John [Y:59'], Foulds, Astley [Y:90+2'], Ouzounidis [Y:67'], Branthwaite, Denny (54' Mampala), Markelo, Quirk (54' Simms), Baningime, Adeniran.
Subs not Used: Hansen, Anderson, Dobbin.

Anyhoo, they are 1-0 down. Not the most experienced back line tonight.

I don't know how they got to City's penalty area because we seem to be playing a 1-5-5 system, another cunning plan from Everton... we are full of them, not many of them work.

I made the last two bits up, but wouldn't be surprised if it was true, the way Unsworth has set them up tonight.

By the way Rooney has just scored with a very good free kick, when the game stops for free kicks Wayne is in his element, when the game starts moving he struggles.

It's easier to win if you can score goals. It's easier to score goals if you attack. It's easier to attack if you have creative players going forward or at least a target man to get on the end of something.

Within the first 5 minutes City settled into their plan of quick sharp football, dominating the midfield and for 40 minutes Adeniran and Quirk were out of the game and wasted. They were so superior at times it was embarrassing, and that formation was a real shame for the likes of Beni and Adeniran who had little chance to shine. Tyrer was easily our best player.

Is that a 5-4-1 with Quirk on his own upfront? Simms on the bench??
