Graeme Sharp named Everton Players’ Life President
Everton have announced that striking legend Graeme Sharp has been made the club's Players' Life President.
Sharp has been given the new prestigious role by Chairman Bill Kenwright and the Goodison Board of Directors in recognition of his exemplary service for the Club across four decades.
Everton's post-war leading scorer, he is second only to Dixie Dean in the Club's pantheon of goalscoring greats. ‘Sharpy' netted 159 goals in 447 appearances during a glittering playing career that saw him win two League titles, an FA Cup, and a European Cup-Winners Cup with the Blues between 1980 and 1991. He returned to Goodison in an ambassadorial position in 2000.
His ambassadorial duties will continue as part of his new role but he will take on enhanced responsibilities, including becoming an advisor to the Board of Directors.
Everton Chairman Bill Kenwright said: “Other than Dixie, Sharpy has scored more goals for Everton than any player in our history, which is quite extraordinary and sums up what an Everton legend he is.
“As a player, he had skill, he had finesse but he was and still is such a humble lad who is grateful to remain part of Everton and that makes me even more grateful to have him.
“It's all about the DNA with Evertonians and Sharpy has that. That is the reason why we asked him to be the Players' Life President.
“Sharpy was a major part of the Club's greatest period ever. He's not only kept that love of Everton, he's kept the Everton DNA and that's why the fans love him.
“I could not imagine Everton without Graeme Sharp.”
Sharp will act as a senior Everton representative across national and international media in a position which will also see him become a valuable source of knowledge and experienced point of contact for the Club's Captain, Board, Academy, Executive Leadership team and First-Team Management staff.
He will play an active role in supporting the Club executives to develop and maintain the right culture and behaviours across the Club and will continue to contribute to the growth and extended reach of the Club's Official Charity, Everton in the Community.

Another Kenwright cringe appointment.

The clues in the title.

The question is, what exactly is Sharpy going to be advising the board about? Sounds like a load of tosh to me. Just jobs for the boys and something to make it look like the club is doing something.
I don't begrudge Sharpy at all by the way. He's never earned superstar money and it's good he will continue to earn a nice living. Just if we wanted to see something actually done, then you'd go get big Nev involved.

More (im)pure, unadulterated claptrap for the gullible. Just what we need.
I like to imagine an Everton devoid of the alien - see Dave Abraham's post on another current thread for more on Ripley's unwelcome adversary.

Quite honestly, in the past it struck me as a shambles of a business. These days, it seems bloated on all the TV money with a lot of employees, jobs and departments just springing up all over the place and appointments like this that don't really seem to have any real point to them.
Like I say, I don't know, it's just a feeling I get. Anybody know anybody who works at the Club who can shed a bit of light?

I'm not criticising Sharpy, I'd take the money as well from billy muggins.

Yet some want to take to the piss out of him and this announcement.

How long do they think they would last in their own workplace if they went round telling all and sundry that their Senior Management and Directors were idiots and hadn't got a clue what they were doing. Not very long I don't think.

I can't see a problem with Sharps appointment and of course the club will appoint people who will tow the party line. No employer in his right mind will engage a potential troublemaker. Southall for example would likely speak his mind which is great in the press but no good at all if he was an employee who openly disagreed in blunt terms with what the manager or board is seeking to achieve regardless of whether or not he may be right. Sharp knows how to play the game and will do the job well- good luck to him.

This much venom over what is essentially a PR hire.
Amazing.
31 Posted 21/01/2020 at 17:15:58
All of that being said, they're rolling him out as a not so subtle PR exercise to remind us that Everton were once a good team. So I don't really care, he isn't there for my benefit and I am not paying him so they can do what they want for all I care.

He has probably taken on more of the meet n greet stuff at the club and asked for a pay rise to which Bill has invented a new job and gave him the role.
I wonder if he is earning more now than what he did as a player. Anyhow I don't begrudge him the position. To put things into perspective we are probably paying Schneiderlin 100k per week.
Good luck to him.

Sharp was a scorer and a maker of chances, a brilliant targetman and he had pace. I loved him then and I don't begrudge the lad continuing to make a living at our great club. He has contributed more than most.
34 Posted 21/01/2020 at 18:32:19
Not a chance will they offer a job role to Southall, because he will say it how it is.
Surprising how the likes of Southall, Reid or Gray have never been asked for any job role whether with the first team, the youngsters, or Media.
Some will bring up Grays past with sky, others with Southall being out spoken, but these are the three heat and soul of Everton Football Club, where losing was not an option.

Anyway, I met Sharpie once and he was a lovely fella, and I have to say that he is perfect for an ambassadorial role. Being an ambassador is simply representing the club in a positive manner. It's basically what he has always done, despite our frustrations 15 years ago when we thought Kenwright had taken us as far as he could. He's never gonna speak up against Kenwright - but then that's not the job of an ambassador. As an ambassador I wouldn't expect him to speak up like I did when he was a voice on the radio.
Kenwright still being involved is another topic entirely! But I wish Sharpie well in his new role.

this site with non negative views. Sharpy was a great player for us, is a great ambassador, and is one of the nicest humblest blokes you could ever meet.
Does it really matter much about the proposed appointment? He's not being made Director of Football,
pity really he'd do a good job.

How hard would it be to bring Neville Southall on board to help out with tips and coaching.
Poor Nev says it how it is so not a bloody chance. Meanwhile the likes of Sharp, Snodin, Stuart, even Jeffers soho area Bills nodding yes men get various job titles around Everton.
Dont worry Neville you are one of us, do not hold your breath for a phone call, anytime soon.

I was wondering what Big Rob's views would be, seeing how he's part of the goalkeepers Union?
44 Posted 23/01/2020 at 13:30:03
I think if even Neville Southall tried to pass on anything, it would go straight over Pickfords head and disregarded.
Keown was spot on about needing to calm down, but I doubt Pickford will heed any advice coming his way from anyone.

I'm pleased for Graeme, although to be totally honest I also think it shows that Bill Kenwright's nepotistic influence is still all over the Club. It's becoming a bit embarrassing in some ways or maybe I've just become a bit too cynical over the years?
