U18s beat Sunderland in PL Cup

Tyler Onyango got what would become the winning goal on 39 minutes. Both Lewis Dobbin and Rhys Hughes had opportunities to extend the Blues' advantage.

Everton had their chances and would have been ahead if not for two smart saves from Black Cats keeper. First Dobbin's low drive was turned away at the near post before Thomas Cannon's unmarked header was palmed away.

The hosts got the goal their growing pressure deserved when midfielder Hughes's pin-point free-kick was blasted home by an onrushing Onyango just before half-time. England Under-17 international Onyango could have doubled his tally moments later, the midfielder's turn and hit flying just wide of the post.

Everton maintained control following the break and Dobbin saw a right-footed effort sail high and over. The young Blues had to work hard to preserve their lead late on. Defender Daniel Lowey made a goal-line block and McIntyre acrobatically denied the Sunderland striker.

Everton U18s: McIntyre, Hosie, Lowey, Welch, D Thompson, Hughes, Higgins (65' Kouyate), Onyango, Cannon, Warrington (77' McAllister), Dobbin.
Subs not Used: Barrett, Jon Anderson, Hagan.

In today's U18s game v Sunderland in the PL Cup we won 1-0. We beat Sunderland in the same age group last week 10-0, they must have learned a lot in the last seven days.

Forgot to mention Onyango scored the goal @ 39, with a well worked free kick taken by Hughes.

Blimey Dave! That is a swing around by Sunderland!

On Jesus, I urge caution rather than say I'm not fussed about him.

He is a good player, but is still only 17. Only 18 in January. And you've seen enough football in your time to know it is very hard to predict if teenagers of that age will mature or simply fade.

He's yet to show in his 120 minutes at adult level he is worth the €40 million quoted that we were looking to land him for.

Everton U18's play Liverpool U18's tomorrow, it should on paper be a high scoring game: Everton have scored twenty two goals in five games and are one point behind their rivals with a game in hand of Liverpool, who have scored twenty goals in six games.
