Gueye sold to PSG
Idrissa Gueye's spell with Everton is over after he completed the formalities on a £29m move to Paris Saint-Germain.
The Senegal international travelled to France yesterday to undergo a medical and put the finishing touches on a four-year contract with an option to add a fifth year.
Gueye fulfils what he described as a dream move back in January when it was initially thwarted by the Toffees' desire to keep hold of him, getting an opportunity to win a domestic league title and compete in the Champions League as he approaches his 30th birthday.
Everton reluctantly agreed to sell Gueye this summer after just three years with the club, having purchased him from Aston Villa for a mere £7.1m in the summer of 2016 under Ronald Koeman and Steve Walsh.
The former Lille player was keen to join PSG in the last transfer window but was denied the move when the French club failed to meet the Blues' valuation. Rather than sulk, Gueye's form reached new heights over the remainder of the 2018-19 campaign, underlining his importance to Marco Silva's team.
Given the player's desire to move to PSG and with his advancing years and the need to rebuild the midfield in mind, Everton have now accented to a deal and will be looking to sign a replacement before the transfer deadline in 10 days' time.
Gueye posted a farewell message to Everton fans after the deal was announced, thanking them for their support:
To The Blues
Thank YOU! Since my arrival I have felt at home at this club. You have welcomed me and my family with open arms. Everton FC gave me the opportunity to continue in the Premier League and the last three years I have had some amazing experiences which I will cherish forever.
I am grateful to have had the love and support of you all throughout this journey and I must say no matter the weather or performances, the support was always there.
As you know, I am about to start a new journey, a journey that I have dreamed about since a kid and when this opportunity presented itself, I couldn't turn it down.
To my teammates and coaches, I will miss you and I will continue to support you.
Everton… we are family and will continue to be and for me Merseyside will always be BLUE #COYB
Love,
Idrissa Gana Gueye

Not sure who we can get other than Dacoure at Watford who's proven in the premier league to come in.

It doesn't distract from the fact that we needed to have a replacement signed up or provisionally signed before we let him go. I hope Mr Brands has already got someone coming in. Looks like Gbamin or Lemina.
Whoever it is they have a big boots to fill and deserve support. If they give 100% week in week out like Gana they will get all the support they need.
14 Posted 30/07/2019 at 10:11:07
Always seems like when we buy, we have to wait for the selling club to get in a replacement but it seldom seems to happen the other way around - Gueye and Lukaku spring to mind.
15 Posted 30/07/2019 at 10:11:14
We will need to see some sexy transfers INBOUND before transfer window ends to make this anything other than a washout for me
Starting to feel we are in same position as under BKs rule where every time we get close to Top 6 we sell our best and keep our worst
Will judge at windows end
16 Posted 30/07/2019 at 10:13:35
Did he get better because of Silva, or did he really improve because of the confidence gained by knowing one of the richest clubs in the world wanted to sign him?
Hopefully it was a combination of both, and hopefully we can become a more disciplined team in the future, which I think is what Steve is trying to say@3.

Like previous posters above sorry to see him go, but it was inevitable really once he had declared it was his dream move. Although I do admire the lad after saying it before the January window, and the move not happening, he still played his heart out for us, most players would have sulked and just gone through the motions.
Also agree with Steve ferns post @3, I think we could be stronger with a change of tactics, Gana was relied on too much as a safety net and most attacks seemed too slow.
Anyway, I do wish him all the best, and thank him for the service he has given us over the years.
20 Posted 30/07/2019 at 10:20:45
Gana deserves a chance to move on with his career, especially given the way he's conducted himself in January.
Reality is, after the mindless spending of the pre brands days, taking that sort of fee for a 30 year old is inevitable. If we can reinvest and get s younger player at a cost neutral figure, it has to be done.

I think the sort of player Everton want though are going to bide their time. We are not in Europe, not in London. we aren't a city who call up Atletico and are the pinnacle of rodri's ambitions. The only way Everton can get quick deals done are for players who Everton is the pinnacle of their career ambition (Lossl) or players whose link with Everton makes them a choice they want to make above others (Gomes)
Identifying and actually seeing through transfers are two separate things.
24 Posted 30/07/2019 at 10:38:33
The amount of negativity on here really needs addressing and whilst I absolutely love debate... suggestions that a multi million pound organisation would not have these areas covered is bordering on ridiculous.
25 Posted 30/07/2019 at 10:39:13
I have no problem with him wanted to go and he has conducted himself brilliantly since the interest started from PSG. It probably was agreed in December that if he still wanted to go in the summer then we would't stand in his way - but this should always have been dependent on PSG meeting the fee that Everton are happy with.
㿅 Million in today's market (if that what he went for) is very low
26 Posted 30/07/2019 at 10:41:06
I bet his replacement will cost more which makes no sense at all.

In all seriousness, Gana will be missed. I'm gutted he's going but can't help feeling (possibly misplaced) pride in him. He's gone about this absolutely the right way and I wish him all the best.

32 Posted 30/07/2019 at 10:53:50
We only paid £7m for him and to put things into perspective, N'Golo Kante was sold to Chelsea for £32m.

Time to move on.
Good luck Idrissa, hope you win the champions league with them.
Now hopefully some news soon on incoming transfers.

39 Posted 30/07/2019 at 11:02:45
They have known he is definitely leaving for months so surely his replacement is identified unless it is Tom.
If it isn't Tom Davies I struggle to see where he fits in the side this year.
Good luck Gana, you worked yourself into the ground for us mate and its appreciated sir.
40 Posted 30/07/2019 at 11:04:05
We still haven't replaced Lukaku 2 years since we sold him and had to endure Neville and Heitinga as our central midfield maestros going further back. There are countless examples of us not having adequate cover for certain parts of the pitch.
We don't even have a spare RB at the moment.
41 Posted 30/07/2019 at 11:05:20
Hope you fulfill your dreams and ambition and win some silverware.
42 Posted 30/07/2019 at 11:07:47
Is his sale now going to set the ball rolling for players to come in? This week is going to be critical for us. No doubt we'll be signing a couple of players on deadline day as usual.
43 Posted 30/07/2019 at 11:10:10

As a true professional he will be difficult to replace.
I wish him well.
Friendly v PSG next season in Paris please. I'll go in my yellow training vest.

are responsible for making the transfer market so inflated by buying the overrated Neymar for 𧶀 million! They also spent 㿞 million on David Luiz when 㿞 million was helluva lot more than today's market. We've had our pants pulled down with this deal! I don't begrudge Gana his dream move... but I expect PSG to pay a premium as seen as they've spoilt the transfer market for the rest of the club's around the globe.

£30m for a limited 30 year old isn't great but it's the only offer we got for him and he was determined to leave. Good luck to him.
Brent, I hope I didn't say anything rude in the old francais.

59 Posted 30/07/2019 at 11:56:38
Despite getting Gomes to sign a permanent deal and signing Delph, looks like the squad at present is weaker than it ended last season. Still no centre forward signed and the only rumour about one is Kean a 19 year old from Juventus, to replace 21 year old DCL. With Tosun and Niasse as back up. This doesnt much look like a side who can compete for a top 6 place.
As I said on another thread we pay Harrods prices for Lidl quality.
Time is running out Marcel and Marco, your claim at the end of the season to have had your targets lined up looks like fantasy to me.
60 Posted 30/07/2019 at 11:56:56
I also think Lookman fee was good for a player who has still not shown that he can be competitive in the first team. The challenge now is to spend well and not be ripped off for the likes of Zaha.
I trust Brands.
61 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:04:36
Gana was a very busy player but football is still big business and the fee was excellent for a player of his age and capability.
Let's move on and see what can be done to improve this team offensively which is the biggest weakness at the moment.

I wish him all the very best at PSG. In particular, I hope he gets to be part of a PSG team that puts Liverpool to the sword during the Champions League.
Good luck Gana!
65 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:12:31
He was a good tireless player and I appreciated him, but let's be honest, he had poor spells, like most players, during his three seasons here and he is not irreplaceable, wish him well but look forward to his replacement.
66 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:13:56
The player always gave 100% and chased down everything and I wish him well at PSG.
On saying that, there are other younger talented midfielders about who may initially come with the doubts that Gueye had when he first signed but we will be ok.
A player who is 29 and 29m fee for an original 7m signing is good business and I am interested like the rest to see who comes in now.
69 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:19:16
£30m for Gana is fine.
Now, let's talk about Moise Kean..
70 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:22:12
Still, the fee can go towards our campaign to make crystal palace the world's richest club by paying silly money for their garbage.
How hard did we try to keep Gueye, I thought we were trying to build a team?
71 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:23:14
I'm getting a bit worried now as we have sold one of our better players and only brought in Delph who is not a like for like replacement for Gana.
Unless there's things going on behind the scenes and Brands has new signings sorted then we are starting off the season weaker than we finished last season.
We need to get a striker in ASAP who can score at least 15 goals a season and a centre back as Zouma is not coming
72 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:28:46
73 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:30:14
Gana gave his all, we have made tidy profit and probably the only good bit of business done by Walsh.
Personally believe Delph was bought as a ready made replacement. Kean now in, Centre back is largest priority for me along with right back cover.
Surprised they let Kenny go unless they were thinking Delph could fill in at right back and were expecting Gana to stay...

75 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:38:43
I am 83 and in all my time following my beloved Blues the decline and lack of ambition has never been so apparent, except when we sold one of the greatest players this club or any other has ever had, you all know who, Alan Ball of course. I stopped going a few years back now (age and lack of funds) but I don't think I could sit through some of the garbage I watch on TV – the constant back and side passing, mostly to the opposition...: oh yes, I'm still talking about the blues.
If you guys are honest you cannot argue because facts don't lie, a club without ambition, a laughable board and a manager who came from Watford (after being SACKED!!!!) I'm sorry, gents, but I don't know if I should laugh or cry.
May I add this is not in any way written with any criticisms of the magnificent supporters who follow this club, this Everton, my passion.
76 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:42:46
I don't think we will see a similar player come in and hopefully our team can evolve without Gana, I wish him well.
77 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:45:45
For those of you who are saying Gana is a limited footballer: he's not in the team for making defence splitting passes, dribbling past players, scoring goals etc. His job is to break up play, tackle and cover ground and he's one of the best players in Europe at doing this, hence the reason why one of the best club's in Europe (PSG) have just signed him.
Gana has always looked like a top athlete to me (not like Wayne Rooney at the same age) and I think PSG will get 5 good years out of him at the top level. Trust me, 㿈 million is way too cheap!
78 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:51:03
79 Posted 30/07/2019 at 12:52:52
Kante at 25? Huh? Gana is 30 in September.
Anyway, this is all spilt milk. I'm more interested in us signing Moise Kean!

Look, I'm not saying we should be demanding over 㿨 million for a 29 year old Gana... but 㿔 million would be appropriate for a player at his age, who is one of the best in Europe at what he does.

Few more like that now please
91 Posted 30/07/2019 at 13:20:36
And yes, it can be applied to some players, but should not be the rule that dictates our thoughts.
Gueye has been our best player since the moment he first stepped on the pitch in our shirt.
He is a rare talent, hence why PSG wanted him, he could be the difference to them winning the Champions League or going out once again in the quarters. And they got him for the price of Tyrone Mings.
When Coutinho wanted out, Liverpool said ok, but they have to stump up the money and got 115million.
Gueye wanted out and PSG dictated the terms. Pathetic imo.
Gueye has at least 4 more years at the top, maybe more, his fitness levels are akin to a marathon runner, so PSG are getting him for what? 7 million a season. At least.
And what will get? Lemina? Ffs
92 Posted 30/07/2019 at 13:22:46
93 Posted 30/07/2019 at 13:29:28
I'd say now that our defense is far more solid, we should be able to compromise with someone having slightly lower tackling stats but more capabilities for forward runs/passes. Someone that can start counter attacks with vision immediately after gaining possession. Players like Gueye or McCarthy that win the ball and deliver 5 yard sideways passes when the opposition has committed players forward, seems like such a wasted opportunity.
Regarding the fee, signing a player for 7 million and selling for 4 times that 3 years later, after the player has indicated that they want to leave is a great bit of business. We already rejected 2 bids from PSG, so its not like we have rolled over and died. Can't get my head around people that think he is worth more than that, especially considering we bought Gomes in for 22m?

94 Posted 30/07/2019 at 13:32:43
Nor can I subscribe to the sangfroid attitude of some "oh well, we shouldn't block him from his dream move".
Why not?
He had three years to run on his contract which he willingly signed just 12 months ago. His form didn't dip in January when denied the move. It got better. Not a man to sulk and down tools, then.
Unlike so many more players we would like to get off the books but can't due to their high wages and long contracts, we were in a strong bargaining position when mega-bucks PSG came calling and yet we appear to have been meek and compliant in letting Gueye go without a fight for - in this market - a very modest fee.
I can only hope that behind the scenes Brands has got an exciting replacement lined up. Doesn't have to be a like-for-like for Gana, simply because there are very few players capable of doing what he did game after game after game.
Whoever it is will have to learn on the job which potentially could compromise the expected points return to a very, VERY benevolent opening fixture list in the first couple of months of the new season.
Gutted.
95 Posted 30/07/2019 at 13:32:51
Thank you, so long, good luck and come back if Neymar wrecks your head.
96 Posted 30/07/2019 at 13:47:23
Gueye was our best player.
Gueye was also much more capable than he is given credit. We was a tackling machine, and that is all over the pitch, not just in front of the back 4, meaning he won the ball back in attacking positions.
He was also very athletic and could charge forward with the ball. Yeah, his shooting was a bit limited like, but it weren't we'd be talking about one of the best players of his generation.
Fact is, he was for
3 years our best player and we have sold him, and now we will have to sign a midfielder to replace him which is not easy.
97 Posted 30/07/2019 at 13:57:02
The price seems (too) low, but who knows what add-ons MB may have gotten in.
Say 5m. for winning the Champions League, we all know of PSG's obsession.
I wonder if he'll be firing on all cylinders next season, after our season, playing the AFCON in the Egyptian heat. Knowing Gana, he'll take in in his stride. I'll guess he'll be rested in the relative easy Ligue 1 matches, to do what he's been bought for, in the Champions League games.
It must be a joy to play alongside a player who puts in a shift, and nearly always with a smile on his face.
Bon chance Gana!

Be interesting to see how adding this unselfish, tackling machine to their mid-field will improve them against the big boys in the CL.
And we got the price Brands could negotiate for a 30-year old who wanted to leave. I don't wish Gana anything but the best, but let's see what happens when his all-action hammys or groin, or achilles decides enough is enough.

Didn't get his move in the Spring. Didn't sulk. Didn't pitch his toys out of the ol' pram. Just put his head down, worked hard for the team, and never, ever complained.
The man conducted himself as well as any professional I've seen.
He was a joy to watch ply his trade.
I will miss Gana Gueye. The likes of him don't come around too often.

I do believe this is an Eitc type deal where we try to appease players and not get tough and demand they see out their contracts.
For all those deriding Gana with his tireless running and best ratio of tackling success in Europe lets see how much you like Lemina as his replacement.
IMO PSG have had our pants down for 28m should have been at least 40 which is about the minimum for any quality player right now irrespective of age.
Au revoir, merci et Bon chance Gana.
111 Posted 30/07/2019 at 16:16:50
To those wringing their hands in anguish, I would ask, "Did Everton wrap up when they parted company with Jimmy Gabriel, Alan Ball, similar warriors; and in different circumstances, Tony Kay?" The answer is a resounding No! In my view, no player is irreplaceable, although, they maybe difficult to replace.
The phrase 'The King is dead, long live the King' springs to mind.

113 Posted 30/07/2019 at 16:38:27
We had to get the deal done in time to sign a replacement before the PL deadline, with PSG infuriatingly still in a position to haggle over the fee
for another fortnight.
In the meantime we lose a key player to a club that makes a mockery of UEFA's fair play rules.
114 Posted 30/07/2019 at 17:22:40
㿉m given the circumstances, for a player closing in on 30 is a fair price. I think Gbamin will cost approximately the same so that's fine by me.
I think Gana's improvement in his passing towards the end of last season was down to Silva. He needs all our players to be comfortable in possession. In that sense Gana wasn't ideal but he raised his game. The replacement will have those attributes in place before he gets here, is my thinking.

I haven't seen anyone claiming this is 'terminal' for Everton FC.
I haven't seen anyone claiming he didn't have bad games.
What I do see is a lot of people acknowledging he has been one of our better players since he joined the club and expressing remorse that - once again - Everton has sold one of its better players at the peak of his powers, still with 3 years on his contract, for a (relatively) modest fee in a sellers' market.
Perfectly reasonable observations and no need for others to fabricate and attribute 'hysteria and over-reaction' to such views.
To build a successful football team the aim is to retain your better players and recruit more good players. We continue to do the exact opposite, thus stalling any possible progress, year on year.
To throw Alan Ball's departure into the mix is hardly a glowing example of how the club didn't 'wrap up' when he moved on to Arsenal.
Of course Everton continued without Alan Ball, as they will continue without Gana Gueye. It has done for 141 years and will in all likelihood continue for another 141 years (presuming the planet lasts that long...).
But the shocking, premature departure of Alan Ball was the start of our demise and left us bereft and in the wilderness for 15 years. It made a HUGE impact on our history at the time t'other lot rose to dominance when, having won the title in 1970, Everton looked best placed to rule that decade.
And - NO! - before anyone takes a cheap swing, I am NOT bracketing Gana Gueye in the same category as 'who's-the-greatest-of-them-all?'

Thats very sad.
I had real high hopes for Joe Williams, one of our better youngsters.
I hope there's a buyback clause!!!!!

You was very good for us and a great tackler and breaker up of play.
We've trebled our return on investment, and so it's good business sense and for a 30 year old, it's rare to treble your return in initial outlay.
Alas as just over a week and a half to the new season, in my view we are weaker, than we finished. But in Everton style, it will be another last minute flurry of transfer activity. Let's hope so.
Gana, the Best of luck at PSG.

I need to explain the reason for my doing so, I could just as easily, have put forward the names of Tommy Lawton and Joe Mercer, the point I was making was that football clubs have sold better players than Idrissa Gana Gueye, [ a player I had admired for his play and attitude] and it's never the end of the world.
We don't know each other Jay, and as you live in Brazil we're not likely to meet, but I get the impression from your various posts that you savour what I call a war of words, we have crossed swords before, and my attitude then was what it is now, I won't be drawn into a slanging match.

There are reports coming out of Brazil that we have signed Reinier for a fee of €40m and he will join us in February when he turns 18 can you add anything to these reports

He is certainly not past his sell by date and as in every transaction it is important to have a win-win situation.
This was Everton/Gana/PSG's win win.!

One poster " Everton buy lidl quality at Harrods prices" Oh the irony on a post about Gana Gueye who we bought for £7million.
Gueye was a superb buy for Everton and to lose him now is of course worrying but unlike the sale of Gary Speed for example I feel we can absorb the blow, we had a period of selling our player of the year continually, Beardsley, Barmby ( I think) Speed, Hutchison, Ferguson.
Those where desperate times, I think now we can have genuine hope that this loss will not derail our progress.

I'm not sure it was aimed at John Mc anyway, simply because he his very much a voice of reason when subjects like this come up?

Thank you Idrissa for everything you did for us. Never ever gave less than 100%, nor sulked when you were initially denied your dream move to PSG. A model professional who just went about your business. You've earned your move, lad, now go and enjoy it for the next couple of years. I hope you'll come back and see us at Goodison sometime.

Tony, are you still unsure about it being aimed at me? You may have read my follow up explanation [131].

Gueye's been a good servant but this was clearly a boyhood dream and the opportunity might not come in another year or two so no judgement for moving. When we couldn't sell him in January and evidently had a gentlemen's agreement he just stuck to his task (and was if anything better than ever in a late-blooming side), meanwhile when PSG came knocking with a little more money the club obviously held out for the most they could get but ultimately kept to their word.
Slick, professional, respectful all round.
Ending with a net positive for our transfer coffers, a dream move for the player and a wonderful (and I believe honest) message to the fans. Go with our blessings Gueye!

Missing out on a move in January was tough for Gana, but he took it on the chin and probably then produces his best 3 or 4 month period of his 3 year Everton career, seemingly typical of the man who set himself high standards.
I'd much rather him stayed, especially as I don't benefit from the fee the club receive, it doesn't affect my life so even at £60m I'd rather us have kept him. That said football is a business and Gana is not irreplaceable, he's a top draw number 6 though and you only need to check out his stats over his premier league career to see how difficult the lad will be to replace.
This is football though and transfers are as big a part of football as there is, we have to try to keep making a profit on players who give a good 3 to 5 year service at the club, this will keep the club motoring forward as a business.
We want to brake the top 4 ideally, all the top 6 crap is a load of my arse, the only way you make any extra funds to compete with the best is to break into the champions league.
Gana has gone along with many many other players, only really Gana out of them players actually played first team football at the blues so if we recruit well then we will be able to improve as a team.
Gana, Vlasic, Oneykuru, Robinson, Lookman, Galloway, Williams (old and young), Galloway, Charsley, and many more all left the club, if were honest we could do Miralas, Bolasie, Besic and Pennington also and only Gana will be noticed as an absentee.
The club are doing the right thing, we need to move out 5 years of fuck ups and get the club back on a straight and narrow.
Silva and Brands need time, I just hope Silva gets enough points in the bank early doors to relieve some pressure.
151 Posted 01/08/2019 at 03:00:04
Fully understand we are under pressure to cut wages and raise revenue, so why not learn from being stiffed in the market for the last four years and drive a bloody hard bargain? I think the problem is the sentimentality and lack of commercial acumen that is a legacy of Bill Kenwright. It will change and I guess Brand is limited by the very situation he is trying to resolve. But Gueye should not have been sold for less than 㿔-50 million. PSG are one of the richest clubs in the world and came for him twice.
