Talk of Zouma transfer request played down

Monday, 22 July, 2019 68comments  |  Jump to last

Reports that Kurt Zouma is to hand in a transfer request in order to force a move from Chelsea to Everton has been quashed by Sky Sports News while the player himself has spoken of his desire to be successful at Stamford Bridge.

Speculation on some of the newspaper sites like The Mirror and Mail Sport had it that the Frenchman was going to increase the pressure on the London club to sell him in the face of intensifying efforts from the Blues to acquire him on a permanent basis.

Sky Sports News say they "understand" that the reports are "wide of the mark" while Zouma himself says he is working hard in preparation for the new season as he bids to win his place in Chelsea's first team.

The Frenchman's future has been the topic of much conjecture since the end of what was a hugely successful season on loan at Everton in 2018-19, with Marco Silva making no secret of his desire to sign him on a permanent basis and the Blues having made contact with the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge over a potential transfer.

New Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, is operating under a transfer embargo, however, and has indicated that he wants to keep Zouma in West London as one of his central defensive options.

And Zouma himself is making all the right noises from the perspective of his current club, although he stresses that regular first-team action is vital for him as he looks ahead to next year's European Championships.

“That is very important for me,” Zouma told the press. “It was one of my targets to get into the France team. I had been there before and wanted to come back.

“I managed to do that. Now the target is to play at the Euros, but to be there you have to be playing at your club. So I am working very hard.

“I'm happy with what the manager said about me. That means he is seeing the work I'm doing and I'm very pleased with that. We had a chat, and he was very good with me. He is a very good manager.

“I enjoyed my time at Everton but I'm a Chelsea player and we'll see what will happens in the future. I think it will be here at Chelsea.

“This is a chance for me. I went out on loan last season but I'm a Chelsea player and I want to do well to get my chance and be here.”

Not surprised - he's basically a guaranteed starter with Rudiger out.

Only thing we can hope for is he'll be on the bench for a bit towards the end of the year and we can pick him up in January.

At this moment though I assume we're starting with Coleman - Holgate - Keane - Digne against Palace; considering Mina just got back today that is.

Just discussed this on other thread, Put in an offer FFS ( 50m) show more than the tame "interest" we have been showing up to this point, At least put a price on Chelsea saying NO ??

If shoe was on the other foot Roman would be doing whatever it takes to get their guy ( see Barkely )

Would love Zouma to come but if he's too short sighted to see he will just be a benchwarmer the second Rudiger is fit then we need to move on.

Why would he put in a transfer request when Everton haven't officially lodged a bid?

Zouma always emphatically stated he was a Chelsea player throughout the season, only to utter once that ' We will see what the Summer brings'. Because of Minas injuries he was able to establish him as a centre back with ability. It was always going to be a long shot that he would want to stay. Chelsea have Top Four and Champions league prospects, Everton are one year into a difficult rebuilding plan given the mess left prior to appointment of Silva and Brands.

Jer, £50M? For that amount I'm sure we could do a lot better, don't get me wrong I like Zouma and I also wish we had him permanently, but every player has a value at the end of the day, and I don't believe Zouma is worth more than £30M tops!

I am hoping that we have either another iron in the fire, or are prepared to start the season with what we have, and monitor the situation come January, Zouma will know then if he really is in Chelsea's long-term plans.

There are other areas of the team that require reinforcements in priority to Centre Back in my opinion that is. Without banging the old drum again we are not privy to any situation either in terms of Transfer, or what goes on behind the doors at Finch Farm. We get snippets of gossip, of which a large part is made up by journos seeking a story, of which there is no factual basis whatsoever.

Having said all that, Chelsea can't regard him too highly as he has spent more time on loan than he has at Stamford Bridge, it is because of the Transfer Ban that they are taking the stance they are doing. As James Stewart said above Zouma must realise what the real situation is and where he stands in that. I mentioned on another thread, it is down to him to either put in a Transfer Request or just ride the situation out.

In a nutshell I am prepared to put my faith again in M Brands doing the best for the Club, as again in my opinion he has not made any mistakes, but only decent additions, and also moved some deadwood on into the bargain.

@Derek The price or value of a footballer is always up for debate and to be honest the logic involved ( if there is any) baffles me at the best of times

I am more concerned the fact that he was top notch for us last season and played a major role in shoring up our previously woeful defense which led to ( for the first time in years) us taking on and beating top six teams, second half of the season, The idea we will lose both him and Gana means we have another problem apart for the obvious nobody knows how to score issue

Whatever we believe his value to be we should at least make an offer of it ( or just less than to leave Chelsea to come back with counter offer), Instead of the approach up to this point which has been showing "an interest"

Its just tame for me, if we want him we should at least put a price on Chelsea saying no I feel

Clock is ticking and still only rumours and speculation on the position that is a priority and that is a proven striker. People who are commentating on some of the players we are trying to sell, saying we should be asking for more should remember it is not what we paid for them it is what their present value is.

Zouma is a template. A pacy, covering defender that allows Keane or Mina to be aggressive is what works.

Pairing Keane and Mina is asking for trouble. Mina is a natural interventionist and Keane is not good at mopping up when his partner is unpredictable. Keane maybe a very good defender but those strengths are limited.

I hope Silva finds the right player, it might even be Holgate, but it's a huge step up for him.

We all know that the majority of transfers will come in the last day of the window. I can only think of 06/07 when we brought in players early.

I would love Zouma at Everton but we haven't made a bid and all the signs from Chelsea suggest he is staying.

I have no idea who Brands/Silva are looking at but the clock is ticking and if we go into a 3rd season without a proper forward we will achieve nothing.

I just hope we get things right and its not a case of "balancing the books"

John, 13. Have you wiped the Sandro window from your memory?

Didn't Holgate and Keane start the season last year? They did okay but both have improved since. Perhaps Holgate deserves his chance.

The price for Zouma... hmm. Wan Bissaka was what 㿣M for one good season. Wonder what Cisse would of been worth for Newcastle after his 1 season. We should offer Chelsea the 㾻M they offered us for Barkley. Hard to put a price on Zouma. He is a good player. I'd suspect they would want closer to 㿊M for him.

As Neil said, give Holgate his chance as our 3rd CB. I'd rather we spend everything we have on a striker or two and keep the rest of the squad as is

Shame Jags went - I feel that he would have been useful again this season. If it's Holgate that's given another chance, then I'd go with that. However, if Zouma doesn't come and we feel that we need extra cover, wouldn't Gary Cahill be useful on a short term deal? Isn't he still a free agent?

I am sure that Brands and Silva know exactly the situation with Zouma, as I am sure they will have spoken to his agent if not the player himself. I had hoped that we would have paraded at least one striker by now, but maybe things are afoot that we don't know about lets hope so.

I said on another thread, without any inside knowledge, I'm sure both clubs know where they stand behind the scenes. The ‘story-a-day' drama is just to keep bored fans clicking on websites. Chelsea will sell Zouma for the right price, we will only buy him for the right price, while theirs is higher than ours there's no deal.

We'll have other options and will use those players to try to get Chelsea to drop their price. If they don't we'll sign someone else. As fans, we won't have a clue what's going on, and none of these websites are keeping us informed of anything we couldn't make up or guess for ourselves.

Been saying it all summer in GOT... happy for Holgate to be the 3rd CB. He was borderline first choice season before and has matured a lot since. It's time to throw him in or sell him now. He was actually doing especially well at a young age and hasn't let us down when called on. In many ways it would be a blessing for him if we can't get another CB. The fact that we are trying to shows me Silva have no faith in him... give the guys a chance !

Paul, Holgate is good enough. Wood is concerning. I am convinced that a new retro boot will return with an ankle protection. My first boots were of that type. My dad insisted on them after we both read Jimmy Armfield's " soccer for schoolboys". We are not going backwards, Paul, but I get your point. Moshiri has too much invested. What we need is the luck that brings a TEAM together. I think we are near it.

Andy, that is everything. It isn't individuals but the gelling of a team. The individuals in the mid 80's were average, the team was amazing. Liverpool's individuals now are not exceptional but the team is great. I feel that Delph is going to be a low key but amazing buy.

I'm a Chelsea fan and only came across this Zouma-related news on your site from Newsnow and found the comment section pretty amusing, especially in the previous thread.

A point raised above about Zouma not been playing at Chelsea is simple to understand. He was playing well under Mourinho, then got that knee injury. After nearly a year's recovery, the club wanted him to get minutes elsewhere, hence the loan to Stoke. Zouma would have made it back to Chelsea last season but the fag-butt chewing Italian maestro decided he is not suitable to Sarribollox. Hence the loan to the Blue half of Liverpool.

I think club has always rated Zouma (he was recommended by longest serving scout Guy Hillion) and which is why they tied him up on a long contract but the managerial situation and manager's preference dictates the player pool. Our club has a set of players that they really rate highly and believe in them.

Lampard likes Zouma. This year we got CL games and tons of early injury. Its likely Zouma will remain a starter as he and Luiz are the 2 senior defenders available now. Given we are experimenting at other areas so the last place club would rely on young players is the defense. So its likely Zouma will stay and someone else non-HG player will be allowed to go. But this is football so nothing's certain for sure.

We've done well shipping out some of the deadwood. Where we fall down spectacularly is quickly bringing in fresh blood. OK there's still enough time left, but we have history in waiting until the very last second of the transfer window, in some cases, to secure the players we want. This season looks no different, all part of the crazy frustration of supporting Everton no doubt.

Silva has promised a suitable replacement for Zouma, a striker and a right back, anything less will be big mistake on his part and the owner. I'd say we need those three recruitments just to stand still and I hope he's pushing very hard to get them, whomever they be, his job may depend on it.

I like Holgate but the lad has just not played enough games at CB yet to be trusted as first choice in the PL for a team with top 6 aspirations. It's a real shame West Brom did not play him there as he might have proved himself but as it is jury is very much out and I'd be very surprised if Brands/Holgate trusted him as first choice. Perhaps as a back up but that means Keane and Mina as first choice and I also worry about the mobility of that partnership if we are playing a high line.

Zouma is a pro. Can't see him putting in a transfer request. Perhaps he might say that he wants to move but can't see him putting request in. I reckon by mid week we'll be concretely chasing another option. Not sure which other fast CBs Brands has got earmarked but the likes of Soumaoro, Stark, Mukiele, Elvedi, Llorente, Kamara may be on the list. I quite like the idea of trying for Kimpembe at PSG who may be down the pecking order now they have bought Diallo.

Mike Gaynes
34 Posted 22/07/2019 at 21:47:36
Sam, agreed on Holgate, and let's remember his audition for Silva last season did not go well at all.

Soumaoro's transfer to Monaco apparently fell through at the last minute and Palace is in with a 㾹m bid. Worth pipping, perhaps. Great price for a 27-year-old captain who just finished 2nd in Ligue 1.

Llorente? No way he goes to a non-CL club IMO. Likewise young Mukiele.

Sam Hoare
35 Posted 22/07/2019 at 22:02:16
Mike, yes, one of the best defenders in Ligue 1 last year. Getting him for £13m looks great business and could certainly fill in till we buy Zouma next summer!

As for Llorente and Mukiele, I wouldn't have bet on Bernard and Digne going to non-CL clubs last summer but you never know.

Wonder if we read anything from the amount of game time Lewis Gibson has been getting in pre-season? A necessity given available players or perhaps M &M see him and Holgate as genuine options...

I've not been able to follow the friendlies thus far but the reports of his performances are encouraging. If Joe Gomez can come through at Liverpool and become first choice at such a young age, who's to say Gibson might not do so for us... saving us a hefty transfer fee?!

37 Posted 22/07/2019 at 22:10:00
Just to reinforce the point if we lose Gueye as well we will have totally lost the defensive stability we built up last season.

We already know Holgate and Keane doesn't work when they were both at full fitness and Mina does not inspire me with confidence although, to be fair, he had some injuries to contend with but, even allowing for that, he is no Zouma.

We need a real rock at the back; I will be disappointed if we let Gueye go and do not get high quality replacements in.

Hugh Jenkins
38 Posted 22/07/2019 at 22:36:28
As usual, as the window winds down we are all starting to feel a bit "jittery", since M&M are playing their cards close to their chests. I think we all had a huge surprise last close season when out of the blue we signed Digne and Gomes (on loan) and Zouma (on loan) so close to the deadline.

The first two are now permanent squad members, so another permanent signing and two loans of the same quality this close season will do me.

We shall have to wait and see and put our trust, as ever, in the management team.

Hopefully, too, we will see some "breakthroughs" this coming season in the shape of Holgate et al. Not long now before the suspense will be over - finally.

Even if Zouma does not become first choice at Chelsea I can't see him coming in January unless Keane and Mina are a disaster playing together or one of them has a long term injury as he will see that he might not be first choice here either. Still, two weeks to see which rumours are true.

It is a pity about Kurt, I was hoping he would sign. But it's time to move on.
I also know there are a few weeks left before the season starts, but I'm starting to feel a little bit concerned about our lack of signings. Hoping that we don't have the same scenario as last season, where the new players didn't have any pre-season.
Over to you Mr Brands.

Jim Bennings
43 Posted 23/07/2019 at 07:13:57
We haven't got time to start allowing Holgate to make mistakes in the same way we allowed John Stones in Martinez' final season that was littered with individual defensive errors from Howard to Funes Mori to Stones.

I have visions of similar next season and a defence with the already very erratic goalkeeper we have coupled with Holgate would be a concern for me.

Holgate needs more muscle, the lads got no meat on his bones, against big hairy arse centre forwards like Deeney, they'll bully him like Arnautovic did when we played West Ham last September, the tattooed Arnie deliberately picked on Holgate's side that day and it worked a charm.

As for this blind faith in Brands?

Well ok let's trust him to some extent but let's also not make it so Fairy tale like that's hes never going to put a foot wrong you know!

This last fortnight of the transfer window will truly tell us much about where our ambitions lie for next season.

You make me laugh Jim, with me often thinking- what's he on about now, but I can't argue with your last paragraph mate, bang on the money, and the reason I'm on my I-pad five hundred times a day, at the minute!

I'm quietly confident, but extremely cautious, the life of a schizophrenic, or is it just the way I feel because of Everton!

Michael Lynch
45 Posted 23/07/2019 at 08:49:23
Our defence became increasingly solid in the last third of the season, and it's a massive blow to have lost Zouma and probably Gueye too. With Coleman edging towards the stage of his career that Baines reached in recent seasons, we have a lot to worry about. Gibson doesn't look ready yet, Holgate has never really convinced, and Mina's Everton career has been dogged by injury so far. No Jagielka as back-up either, and should McCarthy every regain fitness he's on his way out too. The season starts in a couple of weeks, and we've bought nothing up front, and are facing losses at the back.

Not great really is it?

Jim Bennings
46 Posted 23/07/2019 at 09:06:16

Like I say, this next fortnight will tell us a lot about just how skilled Marcel Brands is.

If we fail to improve the squad in the next two weeks then it's negligible just like in Walsh's summer of 2017, still not enough goals in the team, attack will struggle with one or two injuries or losses of form to Richarlison or Sigurdsson.

Defensively the options will be sparse and won't last under any small injury hit spell.

Phil Martin
47 Posted 23/07/2019 at 09:20:04
Zouma will sign a new contract with Chelsea. Everton probably being played again, by agents. We should have just moved on to other targets.

Does anyone else think Everton are yet again missing out on Opportunities this preseason? While RS and even Leicester play in high profile tournaments infront of big crowds in big stadiums in the US. We're playing matches in parks.

Derek Taylor
48 Posted 23/07/2019 at 09:21:52
JIm, it's unthinkable that Brands will fail to improve the squad in the time left in this window.

It's all very well of him to say Calvert-Lewin must be given time to develop but he's not likely to score the goals that will see us improve on last season. I suspect we will see a deadline day panic loan in a bid to address the problem at least.

Joe McMahon
49 Posted 23/07/2019 at 09:22:34
Jim, to be fair to Brands he has his hands full. Everton can't attract CL standard players, because Everton have never even been in the competition (losing in a qualifier doesn't count). Unlike City in 2004 (thanks to the stadium they were gifted) our image is pitiful compared to our CL winning neighbours, and Everton haven't even won a domestic trophy in nearly 25 years. We also have to keep Richarlison, which may be difficult.

Brian (39) - Today in the Mail (via BBC site) Zouma is apparently saying he "needs to be playing first team football in order to be in contention for France".

What precisely this might mean to us - I can't say - but it might be positive.

Brian Harrison

I always find it very strange that football clubs leave their transfer business so late. We hear from managers who sign players in the last few days of the window, halfway through the season saying this player will benefit from a pre season with us that he never had this season. So if pre season is so important why don't they do the business before their pre season starts.

Mind many of the players have been playing in the Copa America or the Afcon tournament so again no pre season for these players. We are constantly being told these players need a mid season break which they will get this year, but I wonder how many clubs will play lucrative friendlies in this break, I will watch with interest.

So many clubs are going into the last couple of weeks before the season starts, and many have absolutely no idea what their starting line ups will be, complete madness.

Often its not that the club itself leaves it till the last minute but sometimes the whole process relies on the domino effect.

Lampard can't presently do any player trading so of course he won't leave himself lite at the back will certainly make all the right noises to Zouma to appease him.

Reckon we should be looking elsewhere myself and I must be in the minority as I never thought he was that great anyway.

We also have Keane and Mina (who had an excellent Copa and when fit should be first choice). Holgate is a fine back up and if he gets his chance should be looking to cement his place.

Striker for me must be the priority.

There could be a center-back domino effect given MaGuire is about to go United.

*Puts tin hat on*

Eric Bailly has had a poor season after injury (sound familiar to Zouma??) and will surely be available bearing in mind their first choice pairing will be MaGuire and Lindeloff, with back-up from Smalling/Jones and the emerging Tuanzabe.

Worth a punt in my book - strong, quick and hungry to play.

Sam Hoare
56 Posted 23/07/2019 at 15:22:26
Robert, I'd back you in that. Either Bailly or Tuanzebe (who had a good season for Villa last year) could be reasonable options.

Bailly was great for Villareal and pretty good in his first season for United. Since then fitness and confidence have eluded him.

If Maguire makes the move then i'd be interested in Bailly if available. Many will say that he's just another United cast off but hes only 25 and is a talent who's lost his way but has experience of the league. Nice idea. Though i suspect he may be their 3rd/4th CB and are more likely to sell Jones/Smalling/Rojo.

Weren't there some considerable links with Rojo joining us last summer?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this one cropped up again as the days go by and no other targets are close to joining.

I don't think anything will happen regarding Bailly as his injury record suggests he'd potentially be another Mangala (remember him lol).

If anything it'll be another Rojo rumour maybe on a season loan or something like that.

(Personally I'm not madly fussed on Rojo either).

If the deadline day was back to the end of August, we might have had a better chance of getting Zouma. The guy wants first team football, and by the end of August he would have known if that was something he'd be getting at Chelsea. Currently with the current deadline, he's only going on what the manager is saying, which sounds more positive. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up getting him in January once Rudiger is fully back.
Sam Hoare
61 Posted 23/07/2019 at 15:49:16
Jim@57, yes indeed. Possibly it was all just media games as we were negotiatiing for Mina and maybe wanted barcelona to know that we had options. All smoke and mirrors. I love it!

Not that bothered about Rojo. Or smalling/Jones. Do think Bailly could be an interesting option if available and fit.

I still think that we will be bringing in another 5 players but the later it gets the more chance that 2 of them are loans.

Kristian@60, yes i think that's true. Once Rudiger is back i'd say Zouma has a 50/50 chance of being in that starting lineup. If he's not he will be desperate for a move. Might that mean that Brands/Silva decide to get a loan player in at CB or even chance it with Holgate for 6 months?

Brian Harrison

Clever move by Lampard today in their game against Barcelona, Zouma was given the captains armband during the game. Says to the player this is how much I want you to stay. As some have said if the transfer window closed at the end of August and he wasnt getting a game we might have had a chance. But with their transfer ban and him playing the full game today it seems unlikely he will come here in this window.

I've all but moved on now with the Zouma deal, as pointed out by yourself, he was given the Captain's armband today in the Barcelona friendly so that's got to be mental boost for him.

It's dead in the water that deal now and to be honest I get fed up reading about it on virtually every Everton site out there, little snippets trying to clutch at straws in every word Zouma speaks.

I wanted him badly but even I can see now this is a lost cause.

Yes the smoke signals suggest Zouma stays at Chelsea. If we don't replace his loan, then surely it's Keane and Mina. No other option. Gueye is my big worry and a replacement for him.

We might finish above him if he gets sacked by Chelsea by Christmas and then gets the West Ham job lol.

I'm half expecting him to come out of retirement and score against us again!

Sam #61, I'd say Zouma will get only Cup ties after Rudiger returns, because the latter is a superior player and David Luiz is sort of a talisman for them.

Nonetheless, I still believe there's no chance he will come back to Everton.

Brent, my concern is starting the season with DCL, Niasse and Tosun as our strikers. That is not a top 10 even forward line.

Disappointing re Zouma.

We will probably see him in the January window when he realises his mistake, and his French national place is in jeopardy whilst warming the bench at Chelsea once Rudiger returns.

If Mina comes good probably no way back for Zouma.

I like Frank Lampard, but are his promises to Zouma built on sand. We shall see.

Always a place for him in my book.

Joe #69 I agree with that, too. DCL might just come good, with some better service. We'll see.

Mike@68, why not? If he's not starting much surely he'll be keen to return in January or next summer? He wants/needs games. Or do you mean that we will have moved on?

Joe@69 I'd bet my house on us having at least one more if not two attackers by Crystal Palace.

I fully expect a RW and a ST. If no permanent moves materialize I can envisage an interesting loan, perhaps Mariano Diaz from Real Madrid?

Jim @ 67..

Now there is a bet with decent odds!

Sam, I just don't think either Chelsea or the transfer ban will allow it. They're not going to let him leave until they can bring in a replacement.

Holgate is a good player with a nasty streak which I like. Apart from the obvious history there is no comparison with him and Stones. He was excellent alongside Williams or Jags but had a weston against West ham and anoutavic and I don't think Silva played him again. Fresh start for him and I hope Silva takes a 2nd look. I also think that our beloved Seamus will have a strong season. He's been through it but should be ok now. Love him
