Barkley overlooked by Hodgson as England win

He was joined by his Everton team-mate John Stones who was also an unused sub, with Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill the chosen central-defensive partnership for this evening's game at Wembley.
Barkley has had limited playing time in which to try and press his claims for a starting role at this month's tournament and was no doubt hoping he would again have a chance to impress off the bench.
He had to watch from the sidelines, however, as Hodgson's side laboured to break Portugal down after Bruno Alves had been sent off for a high boot to Harry Kane's head in the first half.
Smalling scored the winner five minutes from time off sub Raheem Stirling's cross.

Thank god Stones and Barks were not a part of this shambles.
Hodgson like a deer in the headlights.
They play absolute rubbish against 10 men and get out of jail with 4 minutes left.
They have to be thankful they don't have to play Germany, Spain or Italy early on in the Euros.
It will be hard enough against Wales and Russia.

How Henderson is even in the squad is beyond me. He's useless at every aspect if the game, can't shoot, can't pass, can't create. Still it gives me something to do at the Euros, counting how many times he gives the ball away. I counted 7 times v Australia. Ross you've got no chance with that idiot in charge.

There does seem to be lots of negative opinion towards Alli. He wasn't too good tonight but he's had an excellent season and compared to Barkley he should get the nod.
Barkley was lucky to make the cut but will be lucky to actually get on. Personally I'd have taken a wide player (Townsend). Least he shouldn't get injured or burn out.

The first half of the season was a good one for Ross, but unfortunately Ali took over during the second half, making him a must for this England set up.
Ross has to be braver, he simply needs to become a leader on the pitch and take Milner, Hendersons or Lallana's spots. This may sound a bit like an anti Liverpool jibe, but fact is they are all bang average. Ross has a lot more in his make up than all three of the above put together, but the above three try to lead, and are willing to take responsibility.
Ross has to demand the ball, demand the right to take some set pieces, tell his team mates he's open and take responsibility on the field.
In the midfield I feel Sterling, Ali, Ross and Wilshire have a lot of ability, and with Dier holding, we could prove to have some top class young midfielders, who are ready to shine.
Ross though could and should be the key, but he only really has himself to blame for not cementing his spot in the starting 11.

Engleland have always had decent players but have always been shite and so it continues, no surprise.

"If I was Baines or Jagielka I'd be laughing my socks off that I'm not going to be associated with that."
Both have had average seasons, Baines especially and both deserve not to be in the squad.

I would love Ross to get a chance in the tournament and take it by the scruff of the neck. But that's a dream at the moment.

By the way, that is not a plea or a wish - I couldn't give a flying fuck about any international side and if I'm honest, anything that puts a crimp in the day of the patriotic flag-waver (particularly those in the home counties) is fine with me.
As for Barkley and Stones, if we get them back without injury - result.

Thank heavens that Jordan Henderson was on the bench........

Hope our lads play well though.
25 Posted 03/06/2016 at 06:57:54
All in all I just can't see England worrying the big boys in the tournament. Hodgson likes to pick his squads on reputation and location rather than going for the best players on current form. Oh for an Alf Ramsey type who risked the nation's wrath by leaving out our golden boy, Jimmy Greaves and playing the lesser known Geoff Hurst in 66, and just look what happened. Happy days.

What happened to the idea that you play your best players in their best position? It seems the 'shape' of the team is more important than whether the players selected are actually any good. I only really care about Everton but would like Stones and Barkley to play to keep my interest in the England team. But as we all know they won't get any game time. I think Stones is a Hodgson favourite but he's not been given permission from the Media to play him yet!

Did anyone see Kane's reaction to that red card challenge?
Now first off it was horrendous and thoroughly deserved a red BUT....Kane's immediate reaction made me think "Shit he's badly hurt there"...........but then he sees that the ball has stayed in play and jumps up to chase it down and try to carry on the attack.
My point is, why go down like you HAVE been hurt when you so obviously haven't.
The aftermath shows there was nowt wrong with him really.
I don't care about this culture of "you have to make it obvious" or "he felt contact."
For me, if you're not hurt, don't pretend to be because in my book that makes you a shithouse!
Ahhh...feel much better for that.

Did anyone see Adrien Silva rolling around as if bitten by a venomous snake, only then to be resurrected miraculously when no free kick was forthcoming.
Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal and even France have been guilty of diabolical play acting, which is another form of cheating. Pepe's performance in the Champions League Final was a reminder of this.
I saw the Kane incident differently. He got a boot in the head and that is bound to hurt so his hand goes to his head. He sees he can continue so gets up and chases the ball. He was no where near goal and had a lesser advantage in continuing than had he decided Pepe like to impersonate a spinning top.
I am not saying England players have not dived but the extreme and nauseaus behaviour of certain players in other teams when fouled - Fabregas, Hazard, Giroud, Muller, Pepe, Zaza - leaves me siding with England. They remind me in this regard of Everton.

The squad is unbalanced and one wide player and 5 strikers, well 4 strikers and Rooney because I don't think even he knows what he is anymore, is absurd.
If he was set on taking the 5 strikers, which he is only doing in case Sturridge breaks down, then it would probably have been better to not take Ross and have Townsend there as another wide option to have some flexibility.
He's going to play Rooney come what may, and its going to bite him on the arse.
33 Posted 03/06/2016 at 10:41:54
England looked really good a few weeks ago, but I think he'll bin that set-up to accommodate Rooney and play an ineffective system with players out of position and unsure what their roles are.
34 Posted 03/06/2016 at 11:22:19
I don't rate Cahill at all, the fact that he is picked before John tells you all you need to know about his defensive capability. He may go on to be a good defender, he may not; at this moment in time, I would take the money offered.

"A terrible, terrible game of football. If I was Baines or Jagielka I'd be laughing my socks off that I'm not going to be associated with that. And the more time Ross and Stones spend on the bench the better, for EFC and for them wherever they end up." (#14)
So I take from that you are happy for none of the Everton players to play at all including the two (Baines and Jags) who I assume you reckon SHOULD be there but are not.
I said they do not deserve to be there are you now trying to make a point that they should be , given your last response. (#31)
What are you saying ,it would NOT have been a terrible game of football if Baines and Jags had been in the team!
I wouldn't have taken Barkley neither by the way, I would have been much happier if he had not travelled because....
1 he needs to sort himself out at club level first.
2 his form doesn't justify his inclusion anyway.
3 I don't give a fuck about international football.
Stones is there because of his class and the lack of CB's.
The whole England team is full of very ordinary prima donnas, that prance about like they know how to take teams apart when in reality it usually is the opposite.
Blame whoever, but this is the reality.
How many players in the England team would get into a world 11 none in my opinion.
36 Posted 03/06/2016 at 12:26:38
Gerrard, swan dive as normal (Granted not playing now_
Wilshere - possibly one of the biggest ponces and divers in the league
Vardy - dives for Britain
Milner - Not adverse to going to ground when someone breathes on him
Rooney - Learned the Man U way well and truly, why go on and have a shot when you can get a free kick near the box?
Sterling - That's all he ever does is dive when he has normally lost the ball because he can't just go forward, he has to try and Beagrie the opposition
Even Barkley is a diver too.
Granted they are not all as theatrical as the other countries, but don't kid yourself into thinking we are any different to the other teams.
37 Posted 03/06/2016 at 12:32:49
Barkley, on his worst day, would have made an improvement to that team, in any position other than defence and goalkeeper.
