Brewster fires Everton to Dallas Cup triumph

Brewster scored his fourth and fifth goals of the tournament, one in each half, as the young Blues held out despite the Londoners pulling a goal back later in the game through Elijah Adebayo.
Coached by ex-Everton players Kevin Sheedy and Phil Jevons, the U18s recovered from losing their opening group game against Tigres by beating Kyoto Sanga and Real Salt Lake to make the semi-finals and then beat hosts FC Dallas to set up today's final.
“I love working with the lads," a proud Sheedy said after his side had won the trophy. "They give everything they have got and it would have been an injustice had we not won. I've seen all the teams in the tournament and we have been the best side.
“We came over here with a small, inexperienced squad so the development the players will get from this will stand them in great stead.
“I've had a lot of good nights in football - playing and coaching - but this is up there with them.
“The whole trip, the whole competition…the players have given everything they have got for the Blue shirt. I'm really proud of the players.”
Everton U18s: Pierce, Yates, Lees, Yarney, Harrington, Baningime, Denny, Kiersey, Morris, Broadhead, Brewster,
Subs not used: Johnson, Virtanen, Corke, Moore, Mellen.

Very impressive from the U-19s. Dominated the 2nd half from what I saw.
Late scruffy goal by Fulham to undeservedly pull it back to 2-1 with 7 minutes to go but unlike the seniors our juniors were very cute in playing out the final minutes, taking it into the corner to eat up time. Same thing over throw ins.
A lot of tidy joined up football from front to back with everyone seemingly knowing their roles.
A trophy for the blues! Woo-hoo!

Just like FC Dallas on Friday, the Fulham side used 5 or 6 subs. Everton stuck with the starting 11 throughout. Notable performers again, Delial Brewster with 2 great goals. He plays with a smile on his face but is very strong, aggressive and lightning quick.
Baningime was an absolute giant in midfield and put in a true Captain's performance. My MotM.
Seriously, these kids put the seniors to shame with their know-how and game management. Running down the clock at every opportunity. Dare I say it but this must come from the coaches. I hope you were watching, Roberto.
Joyous celebrations at the end from players and staff and the North Texas fans look forward to seeing EFC again soon. Safe travels, Champions!!

Brewster has been scoring for fun for years. Remember him being head a shoulders bigger than the other boys but it all seems to much closer now, but he's still scoring...
Sure this will be their last year at this level and will head to U21s next season...

Second Brewster goal a gem.

Young Brewster was flagged up ages ago, as being potentially a great all-round forward. Pace strength, and a good finisher.
Let's hope the likes of him, Anthony Evans, Courtney Duffus, and Nathan Broadhead can take the next step up, along with some of the other exciting talent in the Under-21s. COYB.

Really great to see this competitive edge at any level well done, lads.

Broadhead's header leading to the first goal was excellent and Brewster very sharp.

He actually should have had a hat-trick, pulling one wide when put through with just goalie to beat, and should have had a penalty when brought down, but got a yellow card instead for diving!
But it wasn't a one-man show, the whole team were impressive with their work rate, closing down and pressing, and showing their discipline to hold their positions. Pushing Brewster for our Man of the Tournament was Beni Baningime, he was the rock in front of the back four, breaking down attacks, moving the ball forward and as the Captain he lead by example.
It would be harsh to single out more individuals in a great team effort but, at 15, Alex Denny is a big lad, plenty of energy and great skill in midfield. With his physique and position, he'll inevitably get compared to Ross Barkley if he continues to develop, so I'll be the first to say it. :-).

Well done to the lads, the youth again proving to be a credit to the club.

A kid comes from France, at nine years of age, to become a footballer. He will be living on site, and training every day of his life. The club will also educate him, but the main aim will be to make him a great footballer.
The more you practice, the better you should become, and if a kid can retain his love for the game, then we should see some great talent come through in the long term.

Kiersey showed great energy and supplied the passes which lead to both our goals. Then in the last 10 mins as we tired (5 games in 8 days!) we defended further back, bit dangerous but ensured we didn't give ball away , just hoofed it upfield.
The other nice thing we do is teach them to be two-footed. Harrington played left back, usually midfield, and used both feet well, and up front we had the wide players cutting in and hitting a shot with their "opposite" foot Broadhead cut in from the left and struck a right footer just over (his two goals this tournament were the same, cut in from left, curl shot with right) and Liam Morris on the right did similar, cut inside from right, struck a good shot with his left resulting in a good save. It's a good trait we have developed, Kieran Dowell 's goals cutting in from right, curl with left perhaps the most prominent.

Interesting that Sheedy seemed to stick with his first-choice starting line-up throughout the competition even turning down the option to expend some playing to introduce more defensive-minded substitutes in the final. He didn't subscribe to the view of giving a game and playing experience to all. He wanted to win.

Next game, Yarney back, but Mellen was suspended so Harrington moved to left back, Denny kept playing well and he keeps the same team for rest of tournament.
Same start of the season, a great run achieved with a settled side then disruptions. Same with Under21s, they suffer from the disruptions of loans and in particular 1st teamers playing to get fit, we rarely look better with them in!

Watch out for Tom Davies, he has a style very similar to my favourite ever, ever player Alan Ball... and yes, I'm old enough to have seen the great man play many times.

Those who watched the full games have highlighted the contribution of the defensive Baningame, the lad originally from the Congo but apparantly been on our books since he was 9.
37 Posted 28/03/2016 at 21:39:01
Henen has shown little sign he can perform at the top level and isn't scoring for Fleetwood when he does play.
McAleny is well ahead of both. Duffus does have pace and power and unsettles defenders but doesn't have the ball skills and composure of Brewster.
