Everton line up new deals for trio

Roberto Martinez has spoken of his desire to make Barkley central to his Everton "project" and plans to reward the 22-year-old for his development and ward off interest from some of the Premier League's biggest clubs with an improved deal in the summer.
The Catalan is confident that Barkley, who has 11 goals to his name now this season – more than his previous two full campaigns combined – will remain committed to his boyhood club despite the enormous interest he is likely to attract in the next transfer window.
Besic, meanwhile, has triggered a clause in his contract that mandates he negotiation of new terms after 25 appearances.
And Oviedo, who is out of contract, looks set to be offered another deal sooner rather than later as Martinez looks to tie the Costa Rica to the club.
Oviedo has struggled with injuries since completing his rehabilitation from the double leg-break he suffered two years ago but is for again and back in the first-team picture.
"We will probably look at [Barkley's situation] in the summer," Martinez said: "As I’ve said before, Ross is not a young man any more. He’s a player you can build a project on. When you want to build a project it is about a player who wants to play for Everton and wants to take that role.
"It is one thing as a manager wanting to do something, if the player doesn’t feel the same way then you cannot do it.
“We’ve got Bryan Oviedo who is out of contract in the summer but we have an option and we would like to do something before then.
Mo Besic has triggered a clause which means we need to look into his contract. Those are the ones that are most imminent and everyone else we will look into in the summer.”

I'd also disagree about him 'showing what he's got' when played at right back. He was given an almighty runaround in his last outing in that position and really looked like he was struggling.

An unfortunate fact of modern day football, and all the more reason to get behind our local lad and not berate him for trying do things that most others couldn't even contemplate. Besic and Oviedo have an attitude and desire that just fits with us.
Is it just me or does any other old bugger see similarities to how we developed in the '80s. Top 7 this year and top 3 next.

I honestly believe Ross could single handedly blast us into a Champions League club if he is allowed to flourish and shown the love he deserves.
I really like Oviedo's playing style too, that said he is a crock.
People will jump on me for saying that, especially after his horrific long term injury, but the fact is, Oviedo is never really fit.
We have one of the best left backs in world football (YES, WORLD FOOTBALL, CONTINUED STATS DO NOT LIE), plus Galloway and Garbut.
For me I'd think long and hard before tying Ovideo to any long term deal that may hinder the progress of Garbut, h looked more than capable last season and proved he will become a top player.

Time to get rid of the injury-prone and the deadwood and give chances to some of these exciting "golden generation" players that have been out on loan. Barkley and Besic... yes, but Oviedo? It's not progressive enough.
12 Posted 06/02/2016 at 03:42:31
But the word 'project' still makes me cringe.
13 Posted 06/02/2016 at 03:46:26
Please get this done before the Euros; I don't trust this board or the next one - hopefully - to knock back 40-50 million offers in July and August. Ross makes being blue and scouse that little bit better,

As time moves on, I'm pretty sure that players who are beyond their best years will be moved quicker to pastures new. The youth development conveyor belt Robrtto aspires to will provide the required structure for his blueprint.

By your logic shouldn't Besic go too? Hasn't he been injured an awful lot with less reason (no broken bones that I am aware of) than Oviedo in not even three seasons? I would keep both but what do I know?
17 Posted 06/02/2016 at 05:01:29
And yes, for all the reasons PF mentions, the Barkley deal definitely needs to get done before season's end and the Euros. Good decisions on all three.

Agree with Mr Ferry, every time I see Ross in an Everton shirt I feel so proud to have him with us
20 Posted 06/02/2016 at 07:40:57
Playing in a system that makes defenders look incompetent, in front of fans who are starting to give him a hard time and a manager who doesn't know when to take him out of the firing line.
His form during the transfer saga and immediately afterwards was exceptional. In his last few games he's looked like he'd rather be somewhere else. Who could blame him?
Personally my view hasn't changed on Stones. Exceptional talent, impressive young man, and it would take a huge fee to convince me we're better off without him.
21 Posted 06/02/2016 at 07:44:15
Good news though, and even if Barkley signs tomorrow, those pricks at the Daily Mail will still continue their mission to get him to City (which, with Pep coming in I would doubt) - but their description of him receiving "dogs abuse" from fans at home against the barcodes was a piss take, even by their low standards.
22 Posted 06/02/2016 at 08:13:45
Big new signings are not always the answer either. United are still trying to fit mega-bucks Memphis in and Newcastle have just sent £12mil Florian Thauvin back to France on loan.
As for the youngsters. Spurs struck gold with Deli Alli, Dier and Kane. Likewise Everton with Barkley and Stones. All five 6'-1" plus by the way with another two of our bigger lads, Browning and Galloway, waiting in the wings.
Very few make the grade. Unsy and Big Joe have a whole bunch out on loan where they will compete with men and learn to be professional footballers. Harry Kane had seven loan moves before he was noticed and the experience shines through. Exciting times ahead for these boys.

Unfortunately due to his terrible injury that didn't have a chance of panning out and the Club to their credit stood by him while injured. It's good that they seem willing to continue to stand by him and see if he can get his career back on track.
24 Posted 06/02/2016 at 08:31:38
As for Pienaar we've never replaced him on the left and his recent cameo gave glimpses of what we've been missing with his combination with Baines. Could he go on for another year? If not we really need someone like him to take his role.
25 Posted 06/02/2016 at 08:33:49
He most certainly is, Harold. We are lucky to have him. Watching the young boy's development into a genuine world class player is something I look forward to. All our entitled to their opinion, of course, but how anyone doubts this kid is beyond me.
26 Posted 06/02/2016 at 08:53:41
Thought he played really well against Sissoko the other night who was huge. He also does one thing better which I really like which is put pressure on the ball early and try's to recent the cross.
Did struggle a little bit against Swansea the other week on his weaker side but would deffo offer him another contract.
Besic and Barkley are no-brainers!
27 Posted 06/02/2016 at 09:01:21
Let's hope Besic can conquer these hamstring issues as he is the replacement for Barry, a winner to the core who Everton fans will adore for years.

Love Besic and we have to take the risk with him - but he's had quite a few injuries - perhaps it's just adjusting to the prem.
If only everyone was like Barry who always seems to be available (hope I haven't just jinxed him).
Barkley is gradually getting better and better and I'd prioritise him over Stones if he has stronger ties to the club.
I don't see much point in keeping Stones if he'd rather be somewhere else - we have quite a few young defenders now.
30 Posted 06/02/2016 at 10:45:39
It will be interesting to see where the new lad plays, he can apparently play down the left and isn't put off by tracking back either.
I would also like to see Oviedo and Baines try to emulate the Pienaar/Baines set up that has been so successful over the years.
Could well be an exciting future with all the young lads coming through.

Mo has been unlucky - pitches to blame??- and Bryan is getting back to his best now. It is very unfair to judge him at right back- Coleman was awful at left back when he filled in a couple of years ago and Leighton won't go anywhere near the right side of a pitch. Bryan looked very good at left back against Newcastle and can also play wide left midfield. Keep him and see if Garbutt is good enough to force him out of the team.
I agree with my namesake Phil above- Hk's first team was OK defensively but couldn't score goals, then it all fell into place as the youngsters matured and a couple of real winners got into the team. Cattericks great side was similar- played its best football in 67-8 and 68-9 but couldn't win anything. Come 69-70 the youngsters matured and Harvey suddenly became world class- I see similarities with how Ross is developing.
Whether Roberto can sort out the defensive side is the key. I have always supported him but lately have started having my doubts. What I am certain of is that there is a title winning squad there now once a few mature a bit more- who is going to be able to take them on to that level is the bit I am not sure about but hopefully the recent sound bites from Roberto and players suggest that they are now focus sing on it a bit more.

And I agree we should be building a team around Barkley, but also around the likes of Besic aswell. He's going to be part of our spine for years to come also and we need him to be tied down.
Would be nice if we could get both Stones and Lukaku to stay, and I think the latter will give us another season atleast but I think Stones could leave in the summer but it won't be the end of the world.
We're building a nice, talented squad here at Everton and hopefully we can fulfil some of our potential and start to achieve things in the near future!

43 Posted 06/02/2016 at 22:20:56
The finish to this season and summer will be interesting. In line with your parallel, we came from a dire situation in the winter of 83-84 to have two great cup runs culminating in the first silverware in over a decade and an unexpected respectable 7th place finish in the league. The rest as they say is history!
44 Posted 07/02/2016 at 02:33:28
Oviedo defends better and provides more down the left flank and diagonal runs to the middle. He's still getting in shape but i'm seeing the same lad before he broke his leg. Galloway is reliable defensively but lacks the edge in the overlaps n attack play. Garbutt for me is down the pecking order n should be sold or allowed out on loan.
46 Posted 07/02/2016 at 15:35:48
It is what we probably still need today perhaps. Rooney with a hefty pay cut would be ideal!
47 Posted 07/02/2016 at 15:38:44
Baines stands off too far, does the sideways dance, eyes closed, hands behind his back, which results in the cross being delivered or at least unpredictably deflected, Oviedo is getting closer and throwing himself in front of the player to block the cross as it leaves the boot... no cross, no free header in front of goal!
And those of you calling him a crock, you've obviously never had to fight your way back to fitness after a bad injury, it takes time (yes years!) and you get other injuries along the way before you can get there. Also he wasn't playing a lot and was never reaching peak condition. Before the broken leg he was never injured (hat I recall) and I think it's wrong to call him a crock.
I for one will be glad if we keep him. If Garbutt is that good, perhaps he would have been replacing Baines now rather than on loan in the Championship? Nothing against Garbutt either, he may come good or us, but aren't we always saying me need competition for places?
As far as I'm concerned that was almost a MotM display against Stoke (Lennon got that for me), he did great defensively, just a few loose deliveries when going forward...
48 Posted 08/02/2016 at 14:51:39
Gallagher is really a CB and Garbutt I think will be sold, although he too seems to have injury issues. Is he playing for Bournemouth this season?

Regarding Besic and Oviedo, every successful team needs a strong squad, and Besic and Oviedo for me are decent squad players, nothing more. 3-year deals, both mid-20s so, if they don't make the desired impact over the forthcoming seasons, we could still make a few quid by off-loading them.
Interesting to see what happens with Galloway next season. I rate the lad, he's got pace and is tidy on the ball, perhaps a replacement for John Stones at CH once we is off-loaded to Man City for £50-55 mill. We certainly need to add experience whatever happens; my shout would be Gary Cahill.

Barks is a no brainer but I'm surprised at the 25-game clause with Besic. Clever psychological commercial terms for the club
Oviedo deserves a new contract for his commitment and fight back from a bad broken led!
