Everton get Carlisle or Yeovil in FA Cup fourth round

Ties will be played the weekend of 30th January.
Everton have Yeovil have yet to play each other in a competitive fixture – the two clubs contested a mid-season friendly in 1998 which the Blues won 3-0 at Huish Park – but have established ties in recent years with loan arrangements that have seen John Lundstram and now Liam Walsh move to the Glovers on a temporary basis.
Carlisle, meanwhile, have beaten Everton twice in the six times the clubs have met. Despite finishing bottom of the old First Division in 1975, the Cumbrians beaten the Toffees home and away that season, perhaps costing them the title which they missed out on by three points.
Should Carlisle win their Third Round replay with Yeovil, the Fourth Round meeting with Everton will likely take place at Blackpool where they have been playing their home matches since recent floods wrecked their Brunton Park home.

If Carlisle get through perhaps we should offer to play at Goodison and give them all the gate money?

Could Carlisle ask to play at GP I wonder?
They're not a bad side under Curl now though.

The latter will definitely play havoc with our defence. (If it's not cup tied?)
Anyone know how Shane Duffy's doing at Blackburn?

I wouldn't be surprised if Chelski go all out in the FA Cup to try and get something out of this season
33 Posted 11/01/2016 at 20:49:16
Doesn't matter if we finish mid-table then as we will be in Europe.

Kidding. Should be straightforward but round five will be tough with so many Premier League teams left.

No neutral venue then, which in turn means less away tickets.

We could've used the £9.5M we used to buy Funes Mori to buy a left-footed midfielder or a left-winger.
At the very least, with Duffy in the middle, we could've got away with a draw in Dynamo Kiev instead of losing 5-2.

I doubt we'll be so lucky this time with either of these teams wanting to cause an upset at home. We'll need a strong team to ensure we progress to the 5th round. Look what happened to Swansea at Oxford, eleven changes ffs, and the RS nearly came unstuck at Exeter against a team that actually tried to best them.
We have a real chance to make the 5th round as long as our phenomenal manager doesn't make the mistake of setting us up for a giant killing.
44 Posted 12/01/2016 at 07:34:22
I am all for playing the best team available and don't like all the rotation stuff but the team that went out against Dagenham etc was still a strong team. As long as we keep the nucleus of the side intact we should be good
Agree with you though that cups should be taken seriously. Certainly these lower league teams should not be taken lightly. The chance to progress to the 5th is there. Carlisle would be my preference. Closer to home. Yeovil is a long way!

Moyes experienced 3 like that, Walter Smith 1 and Joe Royle 2. These smaller sides can run and fight like wild dogs on their day.
On paper we'll look much superior but this match is not on paper. It's on their atrocious pitch with the whole town screaming them on. A massive test of character for our boys who will need to get up and at 'em from the very 1st minute.

I've heard it all now, because he's turned out to be the better of the two players out of himself and John Stones hasn't he!
ToffeeWeb, where do you find these guys!!

How many times have we seen in the past, a one-off Cup game where the team from the lower divisions have upped their game, and left a Prem outfit with copious amounts of egg dribbling from their sorry chins!
Not to mention, having home advantage, on a postage stamp ground, with a cabbage patch- pitch, limited away ticket allocation, etc.
I suppose that is why the FA Cup is so highly regarded, and looked forward to, by teams and fans alike.

As an aside, Billy Bingham got the boot soon after that season, the board deciding that 4th wasn't good enough.
I wish.............

If the RS had this draw and we had West Ham, the conspiracy theorists would be out in force.
53 Posted 12/01/2016 at 13:59:48
We had a good side then and them two games possibly cost us the title. So we owe them one. If they get through... though personally, I think it'll be Yeovil.

Excellent draw. I hope this few rounds will provide more opportunities to play our fringe and young players while we progress.

He also famously played both a County Championship and a Football League game on the same day.
59 Posted 12/01/2016 at 15:07:29
The most recent to carry out both careers at the same time was Phil Neale who like Botham played at both Scunthorpe and Worcestershire.
And whilst we are on cricket football related trivia, Geoff Hurst played a first class game for Essex although he did bag a pair.

I'm suspecting a punchline! I think Matthew Maynard's son played for Glamorgan before his untimely death, but I don't think their careers crossed.
63 Posted 12/01/2016 at 15:55:50
Talking of dad and son playing together, I played local league football till I was 50 (Gwent Premier / Newport and District) until a snapped ACL put paid to that; but had the pleasure of playing side by side in defence with my son for a couple of years. I can't describe the joy that brought. Both of us a smidgen under 5'-5'' he was an earlier version of Mo Besic on his aggression.

Our team was totally different to the Liverpool side that drew with Exeter there's was practically an U21 team ours was full of experienced pros. We have the depth and will get a chance to use it.
We have a slight edge on City tonight as they were not able to rest many in their match against Norwich.
70 Posted 13/01/2016 at 15:58:32
Ted Hemsley, who was a full-back for Sheffield United, also played cricket around the same time as Chris Balderstone, for Worcestershire, if I remember correctly.
I remember those two matched against Carlisle in 1974-75 quite well, possibly because they were such upsets. They did cost us the title, I'm afraid. Was it Derby that won it?
