Oviedo withdraws from Costa Rica squad

Bryan Oviedo has pulled out of his country's squad to face against Brazil and Uruguay this month because of a knee injury.

Everton have announced that the Costa Rican, who has only just returned to the side following a hamstring injury and then a foot fracture, will be sidelined for around 10 days.

So, if this 10-day claim is ambitious, that's zero fit left backs to face Chelski... wonderful.

Mori can "technically" play Leftback.

Will somebody lift this gypsy's curse? I don't believe in these things, but this run of injuries is really testing my thought processes.

get well soon Bryan.

Think Funes may well start against Chelsea. Either that or Browning who looked far from comfortable against Navas.

I did say earlier today that we face a problem at left back but was shot down with people saying we have options to fill in there, sadly I just don't see where these options are.

Barry at left back in this league would be like trying to outrun a cheetah with a milk-float.

Bryan is really struggling to find fitness. A serious injury often brings out imbalances throughout the body.

Jeez Louise... Mori may need to earn his £9.5M (cough) sooner than we thought.

Sounds to me like a convenient reason to allow Bryan enough time to recoup from the recent football he's played.

Similar tactics employed by SAF at Man Utd for years...

Looks like it's going to be a baptism of fire for Mori at left back against Pedro. God help him.

Hmmmm... anyone buying this? Very convenient he will be fit in 10 days just before the Chelsea game, I reckon our club is pulling a fast one rather than risking him on international duty!

Let's be honest, we don't have many options at LB so I think he is being wrapped up in cotton wool.

To be honest Oviedo hasn't inspired much confidence defensively of late. I would actually like to see us go for a more defensive defense that can soak up more pressure and allow our forwards to stay higher up the pitch and play on the break.

Long term this would mean either telling Baines and Coleman not to go forward which they wouldn't be too happy about I'd imagine.

Could he not just be knackered after playing the last 2 games including extra time in 5 days?

Makes sense to pull him so we can nurse him in cotton wool till our next game... just a thought.

We go from having too many left backs, to not enough...and we're only 4 games in.

Doubt if there is much wrong with him other than the aches and pains from playing 2 games plus extra-time in 3days when he hasn't played for 6 months.Good move to pull him from a 16 hour round trip and a couple of friendlies.

I know how he feels I've had a long layoff now picking up all kinds of niggles due to lack of game time no amount of training will compensate for actual minutes on the pitch.

We will be okay. Mori will cover at LB. This guy is champing at the bit to get started. I would be more worried about our midfield. Cleverley was playing well. I fear that or midfield is either far to pedestrian when crowded with DMFs. Or far to loose when accommodating wingers.

To beat Chelsea, we need to score goals. But we also need to contain them. I despair that we have not signed a top class play maker. I fear that we could be out played in midfield. So LB could be the least of our worries.

As Bob and Ian mentioned above this may be just a precautionary move by club and player. Let's wait and see what happens.

I'll be shocked if he doesn't play 90 mins against Chelsea. Surely Martinez has told him not to dare going out for international friendly matches, when the club have waited so patiently for his return and have never needed him so badly, but probably in more Martinez fashion:

"You're a phenomenal talent and unbelievably important to the 1st team. We can't allow you to go out on international duty, you have the potential to be the best left back in the world" etc.

From a reliable source I was old that our Bryan's knee has been swelling up like a balloon after a match. So his recent exertions have taken a toll and he needs this time to allow things to settle again and to continue building strength.

Making the decision to not play these internationals makes great sense for Everton, but is very disappointing for his International career with Costa Rica (and he is VERY passionate about representing his country).

Alexander, my white Alan Ball boots are ready and waiting. A few days off the ale and cigs and I'll be raring to go.

He was interviewed after the Spurs game and said he felt better during the second half! Now he is injured!

Not buying this at all. Just dodging international duty after a rough couple of games. Fine by me!

In my mind the friendlies are a ridiculous waste with the huge injury downside.

Had a good 2nd half the other day and did something even Baines could never manage. Picked out Kone with a pinpoint right foot cross.

Out for 10 days and the Chelsea game is in 11 days. I see what they're doing there!

As many have remarked here, this is a clever ploy by Martinez to keep him fit and ready for the Chelsea game. He did fine both offensively and defensively against Spurs.

I remember him cutting out quite a few crosses, and I thought he brought more maturity to the position than Galloway did against Man City as he was time and again outflanked by Navas.

Thank God their counting is not totally out. Pity they lost count of the number of wide players we now have!

Kieren Kinsella, who's the clown? Oviedo??
Dave Pritchard

If other left backs had been available, I doubt that Oviedo would have played 120 minutes followed by 90 minutes in the last 2 games. He played okay but was definitely not at his best.

Unless Galloway is fit it is looking like a debut for our new boy against Chelsea.

Based on many of Bobs injury predictions he should be back in the 'group' by December and reaching his peak by March then? More of a problem is how he is going to fit 4 wingers into his traditional 1 winger formation?

My son played Mirallas at LB on FIFA the other day though, I started telling him off till he won the game. Perhaps I should tell Bob....

Colin #12. What quantity do you count as many? Why should there be many? Are you implying that compared to other teams we don't have enough? Is four not enough? Is four less than many?
David Watson

Just when he was looking as if he was getting to grips with playing again.

We need to look at what is happening to our players, surely all these injuries are not down to bad luck.
