Capital One Cup 2nd Round Draw

by | 13/08/2015  27 Comments  [Jump to last]
Everton will face Barnsley away in the League Cup Second Round following this evening's draw.

The pairing comes, coincidentally, on the same day that Everton secured the acquisition of defender Mason Holgate from the Tykes in a deal believed to be worth around 1m.

It will also see former Barnsley man John Stones return to Oakwell three and a half years after he signed for the Blues as David Moyes's last piece of transfer business before leaving the club.

Update: The tie will be played at Oakwell on Wednesday, 26 August and broadcast live on Sky Sports; kick off at 7:45pm.

We'll lose with that team. Roberto will give the competition a higher priority this season so at least four of the core players will start: for example, Jagielka, Stones, McCarthy and Lukaku.

We should give them a draw, and a money-spinner in the return, to say thanks for their best youngsters (especially as Stones is staying and they wont get a sell-on fee!).

Play our strongest team every stage of the competition.

Get in.. Barnsley!

So excited about this game, I predict Everton 1-0, heavily deflected goal by Barry.

I don't think there are return games in the League Cup, Eddie. Just FA Cup no?

Barry OR McCarthy OR Besic.

Subject to change signing anyone else... I would like to see the youngsters getting a run out against them. Especially that back four.

Another good reason for Stones to stay put and play against his old team.

I'm sure, as John (#6) says, Roberto will give the Capital One Cup more respect this season and send out a strong team in every round. We can't afford to send out a second string and risk another early exit from the competition.

We mustn't repeat past mistakes and I agree the team you suggest Colin #3 would probably get beaten by Barnsley. Best team every game this season, Roberto, please.

Roberto dose not have a best team. Batten the hatches, we're in for a long stormy season. Please prove me wrong, Everton FC.

We need to do a lot better in the cups this year. I think we could afford to play one or two of the kids in a game such as this but not a whole raft.

Conversely I agree with the comments at #8 and #12 in that we should play our strongest side and that RM doesn't have a best team.

He has his favourites but then he just seems to fill the gaps with whoever.

Mix the side up, play a few youngsters but the majority first team players.

Play a fairly strong team. Certainly give the likes of Besic, Oviedo and Deulofeu a chance to build match fitness. But, make sure that you have at least five or six of the regular starting eleven a chance.

If we must play young players, give Browning and McAleny some game time during the game. They are regulars in a match day squad so it isn't that much of a gamble.

Yes! Can't believe my luck! My girlfriend lives in Yorkshire so this is not far away from us at all, it'll be her first Everton game. Play a strong side please Roberto and give us a happy day out! COYB!

Full strength side for me. We need to take this competition seriously this season. It's our chance to end 20 years without a trophy.

We need a run so desperately in this Cup. It's our only realistic hope of winning silverware, too many of our bogey sides take the FA Cup seriously so we've no chance of getting past a semi-final in that.

I'm sick of our low level ambitions and hearing "Let's have a good cup run" ... Let's bloody well WIN one!!!

There's nothing good about losing a quarter-final or a semi-final. Shove the hard luck tales and shed this losers' mentality and let's win something.

Hear, hear, Jim. I think we do have the capacity to play in a less cautious way than we regularly see under Roberto in the Premier League, but this normally only asserts itself when we go one goal behind and take off the shackles a little? We should go for the throat in cup games, home or away, and start games with attacking intent.

Martinez has to give our superb travelling fans something to shout about, there's not been much to cheer in away cup ties since we beat Sunderland on that mesmeric night in the FA Quarterfinal?

I'd give all of our new signings a run out.

I would like to see Ledson playing alongside McCarthy, a great player to learn his trade from and get match experience alongside. If mistakes were made, McCarthy has the legs to make up for some of them.

Ledson is not the type to hide and showed in that Europa League game that he can organize and boss people around. I would like to see both start but in front of a back three of Browning, Stones and Galloway which would allow an extra attacking player and enable a front two of Lukaku and McAleny. So my team would be:-

Browning, Stones, Galloway;
Ledson, McCarthy;
Deulofeu, Barkley, Mirallas;
McAleny, Lukaku.

I wouldn't bet on us winning this one. We have an appalling record in this cup. Home win with the Tykes really up for it after us taking two of their best young players of recent times.

Anyone remember David Currie, a latter day Mirallas?

We won't win the League this year, top 4 just as unlikely, europa looks too much of a push.

With no midweek Europa League games I'd give this cup the full effort, put a full team out each time, try at all costs to win it, who knows, a couple of wins may breed confidence for the difficult league campaign ahead, especially until November.

Going out to a lower league club in this competition would not be good for morale, for both players and fans. How many games is there until Wembley? Just 6 or 7. Plus a European spot if we win it regardless of our league position.

I feel the same for the FA Cup. It's our only chances of silverware, worse teams have won these competitions than the squad we currently have. No foot off the gas or laid back approach. Go for it, full blast. If we lose we lose, but i'd rather go out giving it everything and our best shot than taking gambles.

A trophy is a trophy and from i'm sitting, we've only got 2 to aim for this year.

Can we maybe for once actually try and win this cup? Not much to ask surely. Also with no Europa this season, there's no excuse about number of games.

By all means rotate the squad a little but lets keep the outfield changes down to say 4 max. GK and outfield starts for the likes of McAleny, Oviedo, Besic, Browning. Wholesale changes will just mean we likley get knocked out at the first hurdle, again.

Great draw!
Put out our strongest team possible, winning games breeds confidence and that is something this club needs badly after last season.
