Caulker interest downplayed
Reports that Everton are in talks to sign Steven Caulker from relegated Cardiff City have been spreading after the Blues' interest in the defender was mooted by Italian journalists in Rio.
Greg O'Keeffe, chief Everton correspondent for the Liverpool Echo says that Roberto Martinez is not currently looking at the 22 year-old, however.
The presence of Phil Jagielka and John Stones, both right-sided central defenders, makes a move for Caulker less likely, although Jagielka's experience playing on the left side for England in Brazil this month may permit the Captain to switch sides full-time if needed.

I like Caulker, he looked decent in a pretty poor side last year, and if the fee was reasonable then go for it. I just think adding a 6th centre back to the first team line up probably isn't the priority right now.

Agree with Dan - good player. There have been seasons past when we would have paid silly money for him. Glad we don't need to anymore. Now I've said that, he's going to have a blinder against us for his new club isn't he?

Solid defender and crucially very young. With stones an absolute gem we have the chance to pick him a good long term partner who can be our central defence for years to come. Caulker could be a good candidate though Bruno Martins Indi would be my preferred pick. Or maybe Eric Dier...

I think Cardiff will be looking to recoup as big a percentage of the fee they paid for him as possible. Considering how strong we are in that position and other areas of the team that need strengthening I can't see this one happening, though he is a good young player. I agree with Sam that Eric Dier might be a cheaper option.

Sam, ..... or Skhodran Mustafi... who played about 30 minutes against Portugal yesterday. Moyes usually got it right buying young starlets on the cheap who then develop and become valuable players for Everton (Stones, Coleman, etc). But I think he missed a trick in letting go of Eric Dier and Mustafi from the academy just when their careers were about to bloom.

Ajay, I'm not sure he let go of Dier as he was on loan with us (a strange arrangement for a youngster) but Mustafi was a shame. I think he was quite small for a centre back and obviously ball-playing was not a skill that Moyes wanted or encouraged in his central defenders.

The Eric Dier deal was just weird. I'm sure there was more to it than what was published, but it looked like we loaned a player for the U17s. I can't say I have followed his career at all since he left. Is he any good?

It looks we are getting linked with everyone again, as space filling journos, are desperate to get anything, whether there is any substance or not.
I believe that Pantilimon has signed for Sunderland, I thought he would have been a useful addition, and at the right price ( free transfer ) but apparently we have not been involved.
The reason (apart from lack of fee) I felt he would have been worth a punt, as I mentioned in a previous post, that Robles does not inspire me with any confidence when he has been called upon.
Tim does not, IMO, have any serious competition for the Goalkeeping position, and due to his consistency and lack of injuries has not required Robles in many, if any, Prem games!
Can we go another season, with this situation ? ( we have four fronts this coming season ) I think we need quality back up.

Not really what we need. Bruno Indi is the new Distin.

I think we need ball playing centre halves. Stones is one. We need another for the long term. Don't think Caulker is that type of player.
