Martinez eyes targets at Dutch training session

 Comments (31)  jump
Roberto Martinez attended the Netherlands' training session in Rio today with his new best mate, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and that has fuelled speculation that he was there to check on two particular transfer targets in the form of Stefan de Vrijl and Jeremain Lens.

Everton have been linked with Feyenoord defender De Vrij before and Sky Sports believe that Martinez is also interested in Lens, a striker who joined Dynamo Kiev last year.

Martinez believes that the Dutch, who now fly to Salvador ahead of their tournament opener, should be regarded as dark horses for the World Cup

I wouldn't say no to either player, tbh; both are very good players!

But I think he'll just be there to watch over how Van Gaal works and things. It's not uncommon for managers to go and watch over other clubs and how their managers/coaches work.

But back to the players: De Vrij is a good CB but right-footed and we're covered for right-sided CBs. We've have been linked to Martins Indi before and it wouldn't surprise me if he kept an eye on him during the session. He's left-footed and would be the ideal replacement for Distin IMO!

Lens though would be a top signing. Bobby wants attacking mids, wide players this summer and he'd be ideal. Got pace, skill and a goal in him and at the right price would be a good signing!

Great hearing Roberto is out amongst the players, actively looking, getting a first-hand look at both potential targets and maybe training methods. Better than some managers spending 3 weeks in a tv studio lining their own pockets!!

If Ruud van Nistelrooy can't point us in the right direction with regards a striker, we might as well give up.

I think he will have also been watching Bruno Martins Indi. We have had links to him for a while. Great to see that Martinez seems to be getting so involved with the whole recruitment process.

Okay, I'll start the ball rolling...
1. Is Roberto plucking up the Dutch Courage?
2. Did Roberto go Dutch with the round?
3. You should never be Ruud in company

Sorry Gerry,
I always thought you were in Atlanta.

Any chance of sending some Cow pie over.

You cant get any meat pies here in Florida.

I need something strong to catch up on this thread.

Maybe some Dutch courage or Maybe Georgia would like a Dutch (night) cap.

Could be after a Dutch Cap to plug that hole in defence!

Maybe we should sign Van Helsing.

He'd be good for those bloody Thursday night games.

Could be for our new team coach, Gerry, I always thought those plush luxury all mod cons vehicles were an extravagance!

Rumours abound that we've agreed a £4m deal for that kid from MK Dons, Galloway? Can play CB and CDM.

Might be adding a touch of Klaas to our attack. Isn't Huntelaar out there?

If we sign Lens we'll need to make sure he focuses on his game. We'll also have to sign Kamara to link up with him. Heard he can be a little negative, but he'll develop into a good player. He does have a good shot though.

Not sure about Dutch players anymore.

We've had three in the last few years - one was a raging alcoholic who fell out with the manager, one was a drug abuser with a passion for women of the night who fell out with the manager and the other was overpaid and sat on our bench constantly moaning about how he wanted to leave, before being released by Fulham after getting relegated with them!

I see your point with those three, Alasdair, but the Dutch have generally done well in English football and settled quickly into the game. Right back to Thijsen and Muhren in the late 70s.

Smoke and a pancake anyone? Hopefully none of these players have their fazha as an agent. Sorry for the obscure Goldmember references, trying to keep up with the earlier humor.

Yes, we have lucked out with our Dutch signings but wasn't Van Wolfswinkel Dutch? If so, we got lucky not signing him, didn't we?

Still, the Dutch do have some good players and the question is: Can they step up to the higher quality of the Prem?

I am sure RM will be doing extensive homework before any signings from any country and it's likely nothing will be put in writing until certain teams are eliminated from the World Cup.

Tom(#869) Robben, RVP, Ruud van Nistelrooy,Bergkamp, Jaap Stam, we gave your boys......oops sorry wrong thread, but they're just a few Dutch players that have graced the EPL. The bad news; we just got the nutters.

D'oh, nobody's done the obvious one yet...

I'd still take that former Chelsea winger back from Bayern if we could get him. He'd be Robben us blind with his salary though.

Who was saying we don't want any Dutch players earlier ? Having second thoughts yet ?

Trust Bobby to be there first though. Come Bobby on get Blind, De Vrij etc.
