The new set-up for the FA Premier Youth Academy has four or five regional groups of 10 teams each: Group C (NW) Group B (NE) Group A (SE) Group D (SW) Group E Blackburn Rvrs Derby County Aston Villa Bristol City Cardiff City Crewe Alexandra Leeds United Birmingham C Crystal Pal Huddersfield Everton Leicester C Charlton Ath Fulham Arsenal Liverpool Middlesbrough Coventry City QPR Chelsea Manchester Utd Newcastle Utd Ipswich Town Reading Bolton Wndrs Manchester City Notts Forest Millwall Southampton Barnsley Sheffield Wed Wrexham Norwich Tottenham H Stoke City Sunderland Peterborough West Ham Utd Wolverhampton W Sheffield Utd Watford Wimbledon The season starts with some inter-group matches against teams from the farthest (geographically) regional groups. U-18 League Match No 1 Saturday 20 August 2005 Netherton
Everton: Lake; Irving, Molynuex,
Holt, Kearney; Phelan, Harper, Vidarsson (Morrison 55), Dunn; Connor,
Kissock (Hoogerwerf 85). EVERTON failed to break down the massed ranks of Reading as they opened the new FA Premier Academy League season with a goalless draw at Netherton on Saturday. From the kick-off Everton were in the ascendancy with plenty of possession as Reading sat back and looked for scraps on the counterattack. Stephen Connor went close for the home side and also had claims for a penalty when he appeared to be brought down as he ran into the box. James Dunn also saw one effort cleared off the line. One of Reading's few opportunities came just before the break when goalkeeper Sean Lake made a superb save in a one-on-one situation. In the second half Everton took time to get going and Lake again saved after another counterattack. As the game wore on Everton threatened more often with full-back John Irving having two great c32hances to win it. But he headed one effort over the bar, then saw another cleared off the line. U-18 League Match No 2 Saturday 27 August 2005 London
Everton: Lake; Irving (Morrison), Molyneux, Holt, Kearney; Kissock (Connor), Harper, Phelan; Vidarsson, Dunn
(Elder), Downes. Everton's set-pieces proved too strong for the home side, with each of Evertons goals provided by Lee Molyneux. His pin-point centres were converted by Matt Holt, John Irvine and summer signing Aidan Downs to put the Toffees three up on the hour. The first goal came via a corner on 20 minutes, Molyneuxs centre flicked on by Bjarni Vidarsson for Holt to head in from close range. The second 10 minutes later was a carbon copy, this time with Irvine providing the killer touch. James Dunn had a glittering opportunity to add another before the interval but was denied by the keeper. After the break, the Blues continued to be the dominant side, finally netting a third on the hour from Downs who was making his debut for the Under-18s after arriving at Everton from Ireland in the summer. At that point it seemed inconceivable that the Blues would end the game with anything other than victory. But a controversial goal with 25 minutes remaining changed the flow of the game. The West Ham striker appeared to kick the ball out of keeper Sean Lakes arms as he made a save low to his left but the referee allowed the goal to stand. With the wind in their sails, West Ham pressed for further goals as Everton wilted. A second goal was scrambled in during a melee in the box with 15 minutes left and the equaliser was netted nine minutes from time. The Blues rallied and were unlucky to see a late Scott Phelan strike deflected narrowly wide of the target. Kissock, Downes. On 20 minutes, a cross from Aidan Downes on the right hand-side found Stephen Morrison at the far post who comfortably headed past the Leeds keeper. Following the goal, the Blues grew in confidence and became more settled, limiting the home-side throughout the second-half to nothing but a series of long shots. There were other opportunities to increase the lead for Everton but in the end they had to settle for returning to Merseyside having scored just one but with the added bonus of keeping a clean sheet. Downes, Kissock. James Dunn's goal five minutes from time gave Everton another 1-0 win, this time against Huddersfield Town, although they had to battle hard but had several chances to win before their late strike. Summer signing, Irish youngster Aidan Downs, saw one shot saved and Icelandic midfielder Bjarni Vidarsson missed another effort from close range. U-18 League Match No 5 Saturday 17 September 2005 Derby
Everton: Lake; Elder, Molyneux,
Holt, Boyle; Vidarsson, Kearney, Phelan, Kissock (Morrison 70); Downes,
Hopkins (Dunn 70). An early effort from Aidan Downs chipped over the keeper and the crossbar while Sean Lake in the Everton goal was almost a spectator. Late drama saw Everton denied a penalty when James Dunn appeared to be brought down as he attempted to shoot having been played in by Patrick Boyle at the end of an excellent 50-yard run. The referee waved away their appeals, but he did give Everton a free-kick inside the box from the move for a backpass. Scott Phelan blasted the effort at the wall on the line and Derby survived. (Dunn 75). Hopkins finished superbly from the right-hand side of the box, cracking home into the top corner after latching onto Bjarni Vidarsson's through-ball. Everton were disappointed with their defending as Albion equalised before the break. In the second half Hopkins had another good chance when one-on-one with the keeper but failed to convert. Aidan Downs went close to restoring their lead but, his lob over the keeper somehow spun inches wide of the post. The Irish youngster was also denied by the post in the closing minutes. Kissock, Hopkins. The visitors took a half-time lead with a free-kick straight through the Everton wall leaving goalkeeper Jamie Jones unsighted. Everton hit back well in the second half and Paul Hopkins brought them level on 65 minutes. The England youth international headed Shaun Densmore's superb cross past the Rovers keeper for his second goal in his last two matches. Blackburn grabbed the points seven minutes from time when a long free-kick into the box was knocked down and finished off. Darren Dennehy made his first appearance at this level. 80), Kissock (Dunn 80). Everton started well and took the lead on 25 minutes when Downs pounced on the loose ball after United's keeper had blocked a rasping drive from Stephen Morrison. But a minute later United were level, when they broke swiftly and a deep cross went straight over Everton keeper Jamie Jones's head and into the net. Downs, though, restored Everton's lead when he showed his striker's instinct to score a similar effort to his first. He was on hand again after John-Paul Kissock's shot had again been pushed out by the home keeper. He hit the post with his initial shot but followed up for his third of the season. Everton were in control for much of the match but at the start of the second half were grateful to their keeper Jones for maintaining their advantage thanks to an excellent stop. Almost immediately Everton sealed the points. Phelan went on an excellent run right through the centre and finished in style to complete the 3-1 victory. After 25 minutes the visitors were reduced to 10 men following a spitting incident. Despite the numerical advantage Everton failed to break down a dogged Wolves backline and on the break the visitors almost took the lead. But Everton keeper Jamie Jones forced their striker to fire over. In the 80th minute they finally scored to seal the points. Iceland youth international midfielder Bjarni Vidarsson was fit enough to start after his recent injury and he opened the scoring latching on to a smart pass from John-Paul Kissock to slot home. But from being in almost total control, Everton saw the home side hit back to take a 2-1 with two goals in two minutes on the half-hour mark. Eight minutes before the break Aidan Downes struck a superb equaliser, after running on to a long pass and volleying into the bottom corner. He then scored an even better effort, but had it wiped out for offside. In the second half Everton were on top and had chances to equalise. But despite lying on the ground in the six-yard box, the referee chose to play on and twice Everton cleared shots, before Crewe took the lead. At the start of the second half Everton failed to defend another corner properly and when keeper Jamie Jones dropped the ball Crewe doubled their advantage. Aidan Downes fired wide and Matthew Elder also went close with a volley, but in a game of few chances Everton were unable to make the breakthrough. Teenager Cory Sinnott came on in the second half. 60), Elder. Everton took the lead after 20 minutes when Aiden Downes went on a run on the right and his cross was put in by his striking partner Matthew Elder. Just after the break Everton doubled their lead when Downes fired in low from 20 yards. Substitute Dax Hoogerwerf hit a post and Everton continued to dominate. But with seven minutes left Everton goal-keeper Jamie Jones saw his throw out rebound off one of his own defenders and a West Brom striker pounced to score and give his side a lifeline. Everton, though, held out and they now open their Youth Cup campaign in confident mood after Saturday's win which is the last Academy League match before the Christmas break. Downes. In a game of few chances, the best opportunity for the visitors fell to striker Aidan Downes, but he was denied by the keeper as he ran through on goal. But Everton lost to two wonder goals - both a good 25 to 30 yards from goal the likes of which have rarely been seen before and probably won't be again. (Harper 70), Elder (Connor 80). It was a close contest with only a mix-up between goalkeeper John Ruddy and Matthew Holt the nearest either side came to scoring in the first half. Everton improved in terms of possession in the second half and the game turned their way on the hour when Bjarni Vidarsson went down in the box under a clumsy challenge in the box after he had latched onto John-Paul Kissock's through-ball. England youth international midfielder Scott Phelan stepped up to convert the penalty. Everton's Vidarsson was denied by the keeper when he went through on goal with 10 minutes left. The Icelandic international also almost set up another goal in the last minute but from his pull-back neither Stephen Connor or Shaun Densmore could apply the finishing touch. They had to suffer some early pressure when goalkeeper Jamie Jones tipped two efforts over the bar. Everton finally broke the deadlock on 55 minutes when Kissock's corner was flicked on by Bjarni Vidarsson and Connor got in on the far post to score. Then they doubled their advantage with 10 minutes remaining. A corner was cleared, but from 25 yards a stunning half-volley from Kissock flew into the top corner. Vidarsson, Kissock. Everton have brought Iceland Under-19 keeper Thordur Ingasson (on loan) and forward Kieran Agard to the club. Ingasson impressed on a short trial and was on the bench. Schoolboy striker Agard has joined after previously being at Arsenal's Academy and made his debut as a second-half substitute for the injured Scott Phelan. In the first half, John Ruddy had to save from both Calvin Etuhu and Karl Moore, while at the other end both Stephen Connor and Bjarni Vidarsson profited from good work by John Paul Kissock. Sadly neither could take their chances. Everton fell behind on the hour mark after Ashley Grimes lobbed Ruddy. Matthew Elder was pushed up front and the switch paid off as he scored at the far post from Lee Molyneux's superb cross. Vidarsson, Kearney; Kissock, Elder (Connor 75). Everton started well and took the lead on the half-hour mark through Kearney's first goal of the season after John-Paul Kissock's through-ball. Bolton came back into the match and took advantage of some sloppy defending to draw level in the second half. Icelander Thordur Ingasson made his U18s debut due to the goal-keeping problems of David Moyes's first team, but he was at fault for the goal. Ingasson came out to challenge the Trotters' forward but the ball was slipped inside past him for another Bolton attacker to score into an empty net. But like the first team, Everton battled for victory and the Cork-born Kearney grabbed the points when he got on the end of a John Irving throw-in which was flicked on at the near post to score his second goal. Everton virtually sowed the match up in the first 35 minutes and took the lead rather fortuitously after 25 minutes when Morrison's corner was headed back into his path and his low cross managed to squeeze past the visitors' keeper between his legs. The Everton midfielder almost had a second immediately but this time the keeper made a better effort and saved from a well-struck free-kick. But it wasn't long before they doubled their advantage with the impressive Morrison again involved. His superb right-wing cross was headed home by Elder. U-18 League Match No 22 Saturday 25 February 2006 Crewe

Molyneux, Holt, Dennehy; Morrison, Harper, Phelan, Kearney (Densmore 20); Agard (Kissock 80), Elder. The first half was fairly even, with neither side really creating too many clear-cut opportunities. But after the break Everton improved and were much the better side. Schoolboy striker Kieran Agard missed two one-on-one chances with the goal-keeper, while Ryan Harpur headed just wide after a great cross form Stephen Morrison. Matthew Elder was also denied by the Crewe goalkeeper. Lee Molyneux's first goal of the season four minutes from time looked to have swung a tight encounter Everton's way. Morrison's free-kick was blocked by the wall, but Molyneux latched onto the rebound and let fly with a left-footed shot into the corner from 25 yards. But they had to settle for a point when the visitors scored through a cruel own-goal in injury time. A long-ball deceived the defence and in trying to clear Matthew Holt looped a clearance up in the air and past a helpless Thordur Ingasson in the Everton goal. U-18 League Match No 23 Saturday 18 March 2006 Sheffield
Everton: Ingasson; Irving,
Dennehy, Molyneux, Rodwell; Phelan, Morrison, Connor; Vidarsson (Hoogarwaert 16), Kissock, Elder. Goals from Steven Morrison and John-Paul Kissock came in either half. But despite an excellent team performance Vidarsson's injury after a clash of heads will be of concern. The 18-year-old was taken to hospital and but the injury is not serious and Everton will monitor him to see how he is over the coming days. His absence didn't affect the result as Everton showed the fine form that has been a feature of the second half of the campaign. After a few chances to take the lead, Everton eventually did five minutes before the break. Morrison broke through from midfield and exchanged passes with Matthew Elder. He was checked by a challenge, but he still managed to fire home a fine shot for his third goal of the season. In the second half there were a number of chances to increase their advantage. But they did eventually settle the match and seal the points 20 minutes from the end. After a free-kick was touched to him by Lee Molynuex, Kissock's shot was not held by the Wednesday keeper and went in for the striker's third goal this season. Kissock. Despite the Yorkshire visitors starting well, Everton began to take control but were restricted to half chances. Midfielder Stephen Morrison fired wide from distance before Stephen Connor opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark. After good play on the right from full-back John Irving, Connor slotted home after it had been flicked on by Matthew Elder. Barnsley pressed for an equaliser in the second half but Everton held firm. Everton defender Darren Dennehy had to clear off the line from Barnsley's Jarman and Everton held on to claim another three points. With so many injuries, Everton fielded a depleted side and two reserve team players in defenders Sean Wright and Mark Hughes. The focus now is on Thursday's derby clash. Matthew Holt is on loan at Wrexham and is unavailable, and Lee Molyneux is on England youth international duty. U-18 League Match No 25 Thursday 30 March 2006 Netherton

Dennehy, Rodwell (Agard 59); Phelan, Wynne (Connor 51), Vidarsson, Elder,
Hopkins, Kissock. The Under-18s rued a number of missed chances as they lost 2-0 to Liverpool in the rear-ranged derby match. It was an even contest with few clear-cut chances in the first half. Everton were indebted to goalkeeper Jamie Jones on the stroke of half-time as he saved well from point-blank range. Sub Stephen Connor came close to helping Everton break the deadlock early. There were other opportunities for Matthew Elder, Paul Hopkins and Kieren Agard, but none were taken. Everton had schoolboy Jack Rodwell taken off with a hamstring injury, before Liverpool took the lead on 65 minutes through Flynn. 65), Agard, Connor (Vidarsson 70). Kieren Agard had Everton's best chances in the first half but couldn't take any of the three that came his way. Despite having a number of opportunities Everton didn't open the scoring until well into the second half. Dax Hoogerwerf replaced Matthew Elder after 65 minutes and not long after he was able to grab his first goal for the Under-18s this season when he got on the end of a low cross to stab home. U-18 League Match No 27 Saturday 8 April 2006 Netherton

Holt, Molyneux; Densmore, Harpur, Phelan, Morrison (Hoogerwerf 85); Agard
(Connor 70), Kissock (Elder 60). With four schoolboy players in their ranks - Everton more than held their own in the first period as Forest had the wind at their backs and naturally were in the ascendancy. Everton goalkeeper Jamie Jones had to be alert to superbly stop one long-range shot, but generally the visitors coped well. After the break Kieren Agard shot off-target when he broke the offside trap to get in on goal. Shaun Densmore had two chances after good moves involving a number of players, but on both occasions the Forest keeper was equal to them. Densmore, Agard, Hoogerwerf (Elder 60). Saturday's game started well when they took an early lead. John-Paul Kissock put London-born striker Agard through on goal and the schoolboy powered home underneath the Magpies kee per. But just before the break Newcastle equalised after a corner was cleared back to the taker and his cross was forced home. Everton continued to be the better side and had chances, notably one for Stephen Connor, but despite latching on to the keeper's clearance after it rebounded to him he agonisingly fired wide. Everton finally took the lead following a penalty. when substitute Phelan, who scored the winner for England U18s after coming off the bench, repeated the trick for his club. The keeper saved his first effort but he scored with the rebound. Everton end the season looking to hold on to third place on Group C; no mention of any play-offs... Phelan, Davidsen, Kissock, Vidarsson, ... Everton had the majority of the possession and the play throughout the 90 minutes and were full value for their comfortable win, breaking the deadlock on the half-hour mark when Johann Davidsen rose highest from a corner kick to head the ball home. After the break, they doubled their advantage when Scott Phelan stroked home a penalty. A wonderful ball from Davidsen found John-Paul Kissock, who was felled in the box, leaving the referee no option but to award a spot kick. The third was the pick of the goals; Lee Molyneux curled a free kick over the wall, the ball cannoned off the underside of the bar and into the net.
