The Rumour Mill — Summer 2004 (July, August &
September)
"Dear Editor, "If Gregg takes over the Club there will be £15m, mainly from his new Thai friends. If they take over, they will 1. Sell Rooney for about £30m. 2. Finance their investment by taking £15m of this "Rooney money" to their own pocket and invest £15m that is left to Everton. "So, Gregg is telling us what we want to hear to get support. He doesn't want to lose money and Rooney is a quick fix for that. When he gets his money back, he will let the Thais take over. "Kenwright also knows all this. That is the real reason why he is trying to stop Gregg." RVS In response to our publication of this rumour, Paul Gregg has issued this statement. Kiraly cover for Martyn 27 Jul - "Everton's cool keeper Nigel Martyn has problems with his knees and the club wants to sign a shot-stopper immediately," reckons Gabor Kiraly, Hertha Berlin goalie for the last seven years. Wyness was formerly an executive at British Airways. Radzinski off by week's end 22 Jul - Tomasz Radzinski will sign for Fulham for £1.8m as soon as Everton have completed the paperwork for a replacement according to the latest rumours. Cardiff's Robert Earnshaw has been suggested as the mystery signing, due to be unveiled either today or Friday. Rooney to Real Madrid 21 Jul - We have been told that Paul Stretford met with Wayne Rooney in New York to confirm arrangements for his transfer to Real Madrid by the end of the week. Apparently, he and Colleen want to escape the typical friction between in-laws and start a new life in Spain. Fulham bid £1.5M for Radz 21 Jul - This story in The Independent has Fulham bidding up to Moyes's asking price of £1.5M for Radzinsi, who pulled out of the Crewe game with a sore hamstring on hearing the news. Gravesen staying 19 Jul - According to his less than consistent agent, Tomas Graveson will not be leaving Everton any time soon... Danes still keen on Linderoth 19 Jul - Sounding more like the rehash of an older story, this one claims that FC Copenhagen are still interested in Tobias Linderoth, whereas he says he is still interested in staying at Everton. Everton to sign Hemdani 19 Jul - So says The Sun, which claims that Marseille captain Brahim Hemdani has been unable to agree terms with Bolton and will now join Everton. Linked to Traianos Dellas 15 Jul - Greek Euro 2004 hero Traianos Dellas has been enquired after by Everton, Spurs & Porto... Next in line: Eirik Bakke 15 Jul - David Moyes is supposedly looking at Eirik Bakke of Leeds but his current contract (2 years left) and high salary (£28k/wk) surely make that highly unlikely. Roll out the 'Butt' jokes 14 Jul - Sporting Life run the summer's most daring and amusing headline ("Moyes could try to pinch Butt") as they report on David Moyes's apparent desire to bring 29 year-old Nicky Butt down the M62 from Old Trafford. Sky Sports also speculate that, following the Savage transfer debacle, David Moyes may turn his attention to 29-year-old Butt, who is out of favour at Manchester United. Surely Everton will baulk, however, at a £5M valuation and a Duncanesque salary level of around £2M/yr. The former Tranmere midfielder has been linked with a move to Everton on and off for the past two years and is probably one of the last few remaining viable British candidates to fill the Blues' pitiful central midfield now that Sean Davis has signed for Spurs. Theo Zagorakis 9 Jul - Tottenham, Everton and Bolton are rumoured to be after the Euro 2004 star who had a spell with Leicester City a few years back. Campbell to Leicester 8 Jul - Leicester City are hoping to take the 33 year-old on a one-year contract (no confirmation that it won't be a loan). Blued & Tattooed 7 Jul - Everton message boards are alive with rumours that Wayne Rooney spent two hours at a Liverpool tattoo parlour this evening having a Celtic cross (or was it an Everton crest?) emblazoned on his back. He apparently signed autographs and insisted he was going to sign the contract and remain an Evertonian. As wind-ups go, it wouldn't be a bad one but we have to report these things, even with the knowledge that Wayne was supposed to be in London lording it up at "We Will Rock You." Update: It turns out he did have a tattoo done a blue cross on his shoulder. Photographs have emerged of the lad signing autographs in the street for a crowd of kids. Gravesen to Hamburg 7 Jul - Rumour had it that Thomas Gravesen was going to sign a new contract at Everton on Monday but this rumour, the apparent quotes from John Sivabaek (who, if they are true, really needs to make up his mind) and Tomasz Radzinski rejecting a new deal suggest he could yet end up elsewhere (Radzinski and Gravesen were both supposed to sign new contracts this week according to Bill Kenwright at last week's ESCLA AGM). Would you take Michael back? 7 Jul - Rangers are rumoured to be ready to offload Michael Ball just six appearances short of the 60 games required to trigger an £500,000 payment to Everton as part of the £6.5m deal that took the defender from Goodison to Ibrox. The Scottish giants are said to be looking for around £2m for him £1.5m, obviously, if Everton are interested! Hemdani denies Everton link 6 Jul - Marseille captain Brahim Hemdani has denied any prospect of joining Everton... Where did that one come from? Forest target Osman 6 Jul - Notts Forest are thought to be interetsed in tempting Leon Osman away from Everton. On and on and on... 6 Jul - The Times continue their daily obsession with Wayne Rooney as they peddle the rumour of Real Madrid's interest in the 18 year-old. But "Manchester United remain confident" they will land him if he decides to leave Goodison. Never mind the fact that United have effectively called off their interest for the summer at least. Dellas enquiry rebuffed 5 Jul - According to his agent Traianos Dellas of newly-crowned European Champions Greece has rejected overtures from a host of clubs, including Everton, because he wants to stay with AS Roma. Angelos Charisteas 1 Jul - The Daily Mirror continue with their conviction that Wayne Rooney will be leaving Goodison this summer with the report that Everton are lining up Werder Bremen striker Angelos Charisteas as his replacement. Unsie might become a Baggie 1 Jul - West Brom are supposedly looking at David Unsworth with a view to picking up the defender, who is now out of contract. Wright chooses Leeds 1 Jul - Another rumoured transfer target for David Moyes has gone elsewhere, Ipswich's Jermaine Wright picking First Division Eland Road over Premiership Goodison Park Charlton target Gravesen 1 Jul - With Everton denying any contact from Athletico Madrid in connection with Thomas Gravesen, Charlton manager Alan Curbishley is now reportedly interested in signing the Danish midfielder.
