The FA Premier Youth Academy Under-17s League set-up for the 2000-01 season was split up into four regional groups of 8 teams each: Group A (NW) Group B (NE) Group C (SE) Group D (SW) Aston Villa Blackburn Rovers Birmingham City Arsenal Bolton Wanderers Derby County Charlton Athletic Bristol City Crewe Alexandra Leeds United Coventry City Crystal Palace Everton Middlesbrough Ipswich Town Fulham Liverpool Newcastle United Millwall Reading Manchester City Nottingham Forest QPR Southampton Manchester United Sunderland Tottenham Hotspur West Ham United Wolverhampton W Sheffield Weds Watford Wimbledon The season started with some inter-group matches against teams from the farthest (geographically) regional groups. For Everton, that meant a game with a team in Groups C and D. Everton then played six teams from the closest Group B. For the main part of the season, Everton played each of the other teams in the local Group A, both home and away. They then finished up playing each of the remaining teams in Group B just once, giving 24 matches in all. Although they finished 6th in the regional Group table, Everton progressed to the first round of the national playoffs, but finished a close second behind Newcastle United in their three-team pool (see below).

Symes, Crowder, Carney Steve Milne With the first team playing less than 20 mins' drive from Middlesbrough's training ground, I thought a small detour may be in order (the early start being much to the dismay of one of my cohorts...). Alan Harper's youthful U-17 side were soundly beaten today by a dominant Middlesbrough side. The Blues' chances were extremely rare, being restricted to a handful in the first half. The first after 2 mins, when Schumacher's hard shot through a mele of players from outside the box forced Middlesbrough's keeper, Turnbull, to make the save. On 11 mins however, Middlesbrough's McTiernan opened their account with a volley. 10 mins later, 2-0 down, through some poor Everton defending, and a failure to clear the ball, leaving the home side to take advantage. Their third came on the half hour with McTiernan scoring his second of the day, beating the offside trap. In the last 10 mins Everton seemed to get into the game. Symes had a header just off target. Crowder had a shot kicked off the line. Half-time: Middlesbrough 3 - Everton 0 Team manager, Alan Harper, was somewhat vocal during the second half, urging the kids on. On 50 mins, he made a substitution: off came Baker; on came Gibson. This did not seem to make much difference, however; 3-0 down, we were always chasing the game. Middlesbrough increased their score line on 76 mins, Garmston heading in from a corner. This caused Harper to throw his last available substitution into the affray. Off came Brown, on came McEverley. At this point, we took our leave to go and watch the first team not before asking McEverley's dad to phone me if there was a change to the score line. As I received no call, I presume the depressing scoreline stood as I left it.

But Everton's U-17 central defender recreated Big Mick's role perfectly at Bellefield on Saturday. Trailing 3-2 to Nottingham Forest in a thrilling FA Premier Youth Academy clash, Garside was thrown upfield in a last desperate bid to snatch an equaliser. The tactic paid off when he volleyed in the Blues' third goal deep into injury time. "It was real John Wayne stuff," said relieved coach Alan Harper. "We had a lot of chances and should have beaten them, but we were forced to throw Craig up front at the end and he came up with an equaliser." After trailing 1-0, a Michael Symes double gave the Blues the lead before Forest hit back again to lead 3-2. |

Doherty), Beck. Steve Milne The rain was pouring down, the wind was blowing a gale... After 20 mins we were 1-0 down via a left wing cross, with the defence nowhere to be seen! Why do we do this? The second half was a lot better on the weather side, and the football side it was a million percent better too. We made it 1-1 on 50 mins, via a free kick that Schumacher drove in from 25/30 yds, the keeper unable to get a hand on to it, Brown picked up the rebound laid it off for Beck to stab the ball home. He was on the score sheet again on 56 mins, this time a left footer curled in the top corner from the edge of the box. By this time it was all the blues; Brown put them further ahead on 61 mins firing in from close range via a Beck cross. Villa scored on 80 mins with Everton again a bit lax in the defence department. Just before the end, 88 mins Sub Doherty popped up to score a header from a free kick a well taken set piece. |

[trialist] (59' Thorbinson), Crowder. Its December. Do you go Christmas shopping? Or do you go to watch the kids play (no contest, is there?) Everton scored 3 goals today but lost the game 3-2. We went 1-0 up on 3 mins when Symes held off two Bolton defenders on the edge of the box, made space for himself, and let fly with his left foot. A minute later A Moogan had a free kick 20 yds out just go over the bar. On 5 mins, Potter found himself unmarked in the box 2 yards out, the ball fired in with some pace, only for him to see his shot go over the bar. We let Bolton in on 10 mins when Colbeck, Everton's number 2, was trying to clear the ball from the 6-yd box, only to see the ball fly off his shin and into the back of the net! 1-1. Crowder had a chance on 33 mins, beating both defender and keeper, and rolling the ball into the empty net, but one of the Bolton defenders raced back to clear the ball off the line. Just before half time, Black dived at the feet of a Bolton attacker, the Ref decided it was a foul: Penalty. Bolton's Bird converted. Half time: Bolton Wanderers 2 - 1 Everton Alan Harper decided to shake up the team: Thorbinson and Potter came on, although this did not make much of a difference to the way we where playing. After 74 mins, Beck from just outside the box made himself some space, had a snap-shot just to see it go over the bar. Ten minutes later, from an identical spot, he this time hit it perfectly and the ball flew into the top right hand corner: 2-2. A draw would be a fair result to day, however on 90 mins, with darkness almost upon us, a long-range shot came in with our keeper unable to hold on to the ball. Dootdon was the first player to get to the ball, and to put the game out of Everton's reach. |

Steve Milne: A midweek game for the U17's to try and catch up with the fixture backlog to see the kids play is always a pleasure as they play with passion and not for money (not yet anyway). The game was an end-to-end affair, 90 mins of commitment; to be fair we had the best chances, and most possession. First chance came after 8 mins when Garside hit the bar with a header, the keeper nowhere. On 14 mins, Scotty Brown had another header this time the ball was destined for the top corner, but the keeper made a great save. At this stage, Everton were well on top. We had another goal chance on the 41st min when Brown had a 1-2 with Rooney who shot on target, the keeper again making a save to keep the score 0-0 at half time. Against the run of play Wolves went 1 - 0 up on 62 mins: centre forward Leon Clarke nipped in to head the ball past the helpless Everton keeper you have to lay the blame at the feet of our centre backs for not picking him up. This made Everton pick up the pace. We had the ball cleared off the line twice in 10 mins: Colbeck with a header but they somehow got the ball away from under the bar, then a goal-mouth scramble with the ball hoofed away. On 77 mins, Wayne Rooney scored our goal and what a goal! He took the ball on the edge of the box, shook off the defenders, made a bit of space for himself, and fired hard and low from 10 yards out great stuff! A 1-1 draw was a fair result in the end... and Liverpool is up next, so all guns will be blazing. |

Brown, Symes, Garside, Doherty. The morning's fog was still lingering but not bad enough to have the game called off. Everton were the better side; they had most of the possession and most of the chances. When you consider that most of our U17's are still at school, it was a job well done. It took only a couple of minutes for us to have our first attempt. Beck had a snap-shot from 18 yds out. Liverpool then had their only chance of the first 45 mins, when a scramble in the box ensued. Everton cleared the ball off the line twice. Doherty, who ran his socks off all day, had a couple of chances: one on 33 mins from 25 yds out hard and low, and another just before half time, with the keeper well off his line, but saw his shot go just over the bar. Half-time: Everton 0 - 0 Liverpool The second 45 mins, apart from one glitch, was all Everton. Southern found himself without his marker inside the box but wasted a free header. A couple of minutes later, Symes headed just over the bar from a corner, with the Blues laying siege in the Liverpool penalty box. All their hard work paid off on 63 mins, when Symes found himself in the box with time and space to score with his right foot. Liverpool equalised, however, just 10 mins later, Everton failed to clear the ball from their own penalty area and, against the run of play, Peers put the scores level. Within the last 10 mins, Everton could have snatched a victory, when Garside had a header go just over the bar. In reality, he had all the time in the world to make it count but, at the end of the day, it was Everton 1 - 1 Liverpool. |

Moogan, Carney, Doherty (Brown), Symes. Steve Milne The kids and most of them are kids did well; they played well, they controlled the game. One-nil up after 6 mins, Carney with a shot from the edge of the box, the ball flew in off the underside of the bar. We should have made it 2-0 on 22 mins, Symes from under the bar, saw his header go over the bar, an impossible feat. On 24 mins City got themselves back in the game with a penalty, Cartwright the scorer. This was only a small glitch, as Everton then took control of the game. At half time, I did notice who was in the small crowd some very famous ex-Everton players: Joe Royle, Colin Harvey, John Hurst, Alan Harper, all still involved someway in football with both teams. Colin's boys then scored a couple of goals to put the game past City. On 58 mins Crowder was 2 yds out in the middle of a goal mouth scramble, and blasted the ball in to go 2-1 up. Doherty was brought down on 70 mins and he had to be substituted as a result a clear pen, B Moogan stepped up to side-foot the ball past the keeper. |

Martland), Crowder (54' Beck). Steve Milne: Its a long journey home when you have been beaten 4-1 and today we were convincingly beaten, although it was the first game in the play-offs. Our finishing was somewhat lack-lustre. The referee's decisions left a lot to be desired. We had two clear penalties denied. We were 3-0 down on 30 mins, all down to defensive mistakes. On the bright side, just after half time, Alan Harper's team talk must have been ringing in Symes ears, for within 20 seconds of the restart, Rooney and B Moogan combined to lay the ball into the path of the tall No 9, who blasted home from close range. At this point, I thought we may claw our way back but on 77 mins they put the game well beyond Everton's reach, again down to defensive errors.
